| Anyone have experience with job searching while relocating? This will be a move by choice so we will both need new jobs, and we have a family and own a home here. I assume the likelihood of us both finding jobs at the same time is pretty slim, right? So what should we be thinking about and planning for? Any tips on conducting a long-distance search (500 miles away)? |

We've relocated many times for work but never when there wasnt a job on the other side.
Things to consider: 1) A lot depends on where you're relocating to. What is the employment climate there? Even if you're moving to an area with a low unemployment rate the likelyhood of you both find jobs at the same time is pretty remote. You may want to establish an address there asap so that you guys dont get passed over for jobs due to your current location. Companies today are not keen on hiring people who live more than 50 miles from the job's location. No need to look for outside talent when you have a lot of hungry talent in your back yard. I speak from experience on this one! 2) Do you have 9-12 months in a rainy day fund? You many need it considering you're going from 2 incomes to no income. unless you're independantly wealthy? 3) How old are the kids and will you go public or private? Make sure you move to the right neighborhood with excellent public even if you dont plan to go public...rent for at least a year so you really get to know the area b4 you buy. 4) Are you going to sell here and buy there? 5) Be prepared to pay $1500-2K to ship 2 cars - and that's on the cheap. 6) Make sure your bank has locations in your new area. If not, you will probably need to change banks...even with online banking you will still need a brick and mortar location. |
