I'm about to quit my job. I have an offer to join a new organization. I don't have a lot of experience with job transitions. I'm giving 3 months notice. Any advice about things to say/do/keep in mind?
Thank you! |
| Depends if you like your current shop, or hate them! 3 months is a long warning shot. Why is that? Is the offer to start sooo much in the future? I would wait telling current employer til you got waaaay closer to your next job before giving notice. |
| Love the place I am, but don't make ends meet. I'm staying in the same small sector, and wanted to leave them well, and thought the long lead time would be good. If they don't want me around that long, or fill the role sooner, I'd leave sooner. |
| Unless it's a HIGHLY specialized field with little possibility they'll find someone new quickly, 3 months is much too long. 1 month is generous, and 6 weeks would be the longest I'd give under most circumstances. |
| OK - thanks for that feedback. Any other things to keep in mind to make a good transition? Should I want to let anyone know in/out of the organization (it's a nonprofit, and I'm senior management)? I'm not trying to put myself in the spotlight - just want to follow best practice. |

I was an executive director for a small non-profit many years ago and I gave four months' notice. It ended up being WAY too long. They took forever to do the search and ended up hiring someone at the last minute, anyway. I thought I was doing them a big favor but it was just too much time.
I'd say a month would be the right amount of time and generous on your part. |
| Don't give them three months. I did that once when I was headed off to grad school and I got laid off about a month later. |
| Don't give such a long notice. I gave twi month's notice many years ago (I loved my job and was relocating for personal reasons) and my boss was so mad at me for leaving that she made my life pretty difficult in those last few weeks. |
