When is it too late to follow up on an interview?

I had a job interview a little over a month ago. The interview was not really for a specific job, but rather a reference interview which was set up by our campus recruiter. In the interview, I was told that it was too early at this point for the company to have a concrete list of available internship positions for next summer but I should here some feedback in a few weeks. In the midst of all of this, I completely forgot to send a thank you to the recruiter!!! Am I too late? Or is it better late than never?

Agree...follow-up and say I wanted to thank you again for your time and to inquire about any possible next steps or further information I may need to provide.
