Thing is though, if Hogan wins and caucuses with Republicans, Donald Trump and MAGA Majority Leader will be setting the agenda, not “moderate” Larry Hogan. Sure, maybe once every 3 or 4 years he’ll vote against something you hate, but he’ll do so only if he’s been given permission beforehand because his vote isn’t needed. He will never ever EVER provide the deciding vote against something desired by Donald Trump or MAGA.

Everyone wants Maryland voters to vote strategically. Maybe they should just vote for whomever they feel will represent the whole state best in Congress.

If you want MAGA policies, by all means vote for Larry Hogan because that’s what you’ll be getting. Just don’t delude yourself into thinking that putting Larry Hogan in the U.S. Senate for 6 years will lead to more moderate legislation or SC justices. It won’t. Being a senator is nothing like being a governor.

What MAGA policies does Hogan support?

The ones supported by the Republicans in the Senate, if he gets elected. What do you think caucusing with the Republicans in the Senate means?

Why don’t you tell me what caucusing means? Individual Senators are given broad discretion so you seem to want to insinuate something with out actually saying it.

And how do they use this broad discretion that they are given?

Well, there was one Senator holding up all military promotions for months.

But you tell me what caucusing means. I am a Democrat planning on voting for Hogan so curious to know how it will fulfill the MAGA agenda, as you say.

Larry Hogan signs up with Team Republican. Team Republican pushes the MAGA agenda. Larry Hogan always provides the deciding votes if/when his votes are needed. Larry Hogan only becomes “moderate” when his vote is not needed.

What are you talking about? Making deciding votes in favor of MAGA policies is exactly the opposite of what Hogan is campaigning on. You say that caucusing is enough but cannot explain what that means in practical terms.

Please disregard whatever Larry Hogan is saying on the campaign trail right now to appear more moderate and get your vote. It doesn’t mean anything. Don’t kid yourself. If Trump wins, he will be calling the shots. Not Larry Hogan. And Hogan will do as he is told when his votes are needed. That’s just reality.

I disagree. I think Hogan has realized that this dream of presidency or beyond won't happen. He's handcuffed to Maryland. And there's nothing a moderate democrat from MD loves more than seeing a republican stand up to Trump.

He's 100% going to win. But I also have some faith that he'll stay true to how he's acted for the last 8 years and not be afraid of Trump

Exactly. It’s not like he’s a fluke. He not only won but was reelected as governor. He knows exactly what MD voters like and will act accordingly while in office or he will not not reelected. He’s going to win and will probably served a very long time.

I don’t know. Trump lost Maryland by 33 points in 2020 and David Trone (most likely) will be a tough matchup. Suburban Maryland voters are savvy. They understand the difference between a governor and senator. And Hogan absolutely cannot win without them. Despite his name recognition, this will be an uphill climb for Hogan.

Hogan won western Montgomery County in both elections. Suburban MD voters know what they are getting in Hogan and have no problem voting for him. But also, the state is much bigger than DC suburbs and I don’t think Trone can best Hogan in Baltimore County, Westminster, Eastern Shore, etc. Alsobrooks has absolutely zero chance.

Voting for governor and voting for senator are not the same thing, and voters understand this. That’s why you so often see Democratic governors in states that Biden wouldn’t have a chance in hell of winning. But we’ll see.

Yeah. This is just Youngkin all over again. Campaign as a “reasonable” R but when you are elected you become part of the machine outlawing abortion rights, confirming nutball judges, ending NATO etc.

Plus it’s not like Hogan really has that great a record. He wasted tons of state money with that stunt of flying masks in from Korea that were worthless, he screwed over blue parts of the state, his chief of staff was corrupt (died fleeing the FBI). It’s not like he’s Eisenhower or even Morella.

Hogan was a two term Republican governor who was very anti MAGA and very anti Trump and all they stood for. So he won’t pull a Youngkin as senator, and suddenly go MAGA like he did.

The key difference between Hogan and Youngkin are that Hogan has a track record in office and also, Hogan did not campaign on a MAGA agenda. Youngkin campaigned on CRT. Hogan has never waded into the culture wars.
\

Hogan definitely did wade into the culture wars.

The key difference between Hogan and Youngkin is that Hogan had to deal with a state legislature that had a Democratic supermajority.

+1 I may have posted this earlier but Hogan will have similar results to Steve Bullock in Montana and Phil Bredesen in Tennessee, both very popular governors in the opposite party of what their states usually do, who then ran for Senate and lost. Voters are smart.

The biggest problem with voting for Hogan is handing the Senate to the Republicans. NOTHING is worth that cost.

What exactly would that do and why is it important to MD residents?

Very good point about Phil Bredesen. He won reelection as governor in 2006 with 69% of the vote and then lost the race for senate in 2018 by over 10 points. That’s a 50-point swing. And 2018 was a blue wave election.

It’s only April and the campaign hasn’t even begun yet. Because Roe v Wade was overturned, by Election Day Maryland Democrats, especially female Democrats, will be very focused on lifetime Supreme Court appointments. And Larry Hogan has promised to block all of Joe Biden’s nominees and almost certainly would provide the deciding vote for anyone nominated by Donald Trump.

+1 I may have posted this earlier but Hogan will have similar results to Steve Bullock in Montana and Phil Bredesen in Tennessee, both very popular governors in the opposite party of what their states usually do, who then ran for Senate and lost. Voters are smart.

I am fascinated that you folks are just ignoring the polling. It will be fun watching the public freak out from people like you when Hogan wins.

I guess this is how the election is going to go, a bunch of people lying about Larry Hogan. He has made no such promises to do any of the things that you say.

I guess complaining about how he led Maryland to decreased unemployment, more revenue, balanced budgets, supported more road construction, canceled the Baltimore Red Line or that he approved the Purple Line amid significant Democratic pressure isn’t getting you the traction you thought among voters?

Hogan will absolutely block Biden's Supreme Court nominees. This is unfortunately the predictable path of every Republican Senator, and thinking that Hogan will stand up to the Trump mob is wishful thinking. I suppose anything is possible, but why even take that chance? Isn't it just easier to vote for the candidate who certainly won't vote to erode our rights, as opposed to just hoping and praying that Hogan won't be disastrous?

Hogan promised to caucus with Republicans. That means that Biden’s Supreme Court nominees won’t get a vote if Republicans have a majority.

And there’s no chance in hell Larry Hogan would give Democrats the 51st vote against one of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominees.
