FIL has worked at walmart for 5 years now- still stuck on overnights - had to work on thanksgiving - cannot take enough days in a row-
I am wondering if another retailer may have more flexibility or if it would just be more of the same. I figure if the chain actually closes overnight, more likely to work day shifts - I am sure people work overnight at target too - but less of them? [google] |
| What about Costco? They have a reputation for treating their employees well. |
| My mom has worked retail her whole life - Kmart and Harris Teeter mostly. My mom has been able to get off on Thanksgiving and Christmas but always always has to work on Christmas eve. |
| I worked at Babies R Us for years when I was in college. They're not open overnight, don't do Black Friday sales, and are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. |
| Wegman's has a reputation for being a good retail job. |
| My friend LOVES working at REI. |
| My DH has worked for REI for 8 years. He likes the culture. The pay is pretty good and the benefits are very generous-- (and good matching on 401k). He is on the management team and usually does have to work Black Friday and Christmas Eve. Also, there are a few overnight projects per year (rotate stock for the seasons) but that is like 3 or 4 times/year. |

I absolutely loved working at Walgreens. The day they opened their 3,000 they gave every employee stock. 32 hours was considered full time and they offered medical, stock options, and retirement benefits. The store was open 365 but not 24hrs so I did work holidays. I was young and childless so I offered to work the holidays and since I offered to work I was able to pick my shift.
A store recently opened 10 miles away (closest to me) and I really wanted to go down and fill out an application. I just don't think I can even fit a part-time job like that into my schedule. |
| Friend of mine worked at Container Store and actually loved it. Good pay, benefits, and flexibility. |
I used to work at the Container Store, about 8 years ago. It is a very employee-friendly company! Starting pay is very good for retail, they offer excellent benefits, and (in order to steal back your entire paycheck ) they offer a 40% employee discount, except on Elfa, where they offer a 50% discount. It was the best retail job I ever worked. On the down side, they are well known for being a great company to work for, so there is a lot of competition for jobs.

| Another vote for Container Store |
| I have heard good things about Whole Foods. |

If your FIL likes books, Barnes & Noble is a good place. Nice benefits, decent pay, and nice discount.
If your near a Wawa, it's a great company to work for. Worked there in my early 20's. They promote from within (I was hired as a cashier for a store that hadn't been built yet. I was there 3 years and by the time I left I was an assistant manager. If I'd wanted to go that route I could have had my own store). They have great benefits, employee stock/401k options, an employee credit union, they'll subsidize college courses... I could go on and on. |
