Consultant considering second child

Anonymous
When I had my first child I had a full time job that paid for Short Term Disability during my maternity leave (typical 3/4 of salary, or whatever it was). Since then I've taken on a full time consulting job that gives me a stipend for health care and retirement but does not include disability.
What are my options, if any, for paid maternity leave? Do people buy their own disability insurance?

Thanks!

You can buy disability insurance and a local, trusted broker can help you but read the fine print carefully to make sure that maternity is covered and under what circumstances. Policies sometimes contain clauses that will not pay you if you can do the basic job unless there are extenuating reasons.

I just saved up money and essentially was unpaid for 3 months (I am a fed). I had just enough leave and worked just enough from home that I maintained my insurance, But it really was a huge hit. Disability does not always cover maternity leave.
