Tell him there are tiny bugs in there. Maybe that will gross him out enough to stop??

Not OP but good idea. I am dealing with the same problem.

There's no way to make him stop. Just tell him he can only do it in the bathroom and to wash his hands afterward. It's not a big deal.

Just let peer pressure work its magic. And when he is upset because other kids made fun of him for picking his nose and eating it DO NOT TAKE HIS SIDE. Tell him flatly and unemotionally that it is a real bummer that other kids made fun of him, but that you have told him repeatedly that it is a disgusting habit and if he doesn't want kids to make fun of him he should stop doing it. I tried EVERYTHING with my daughter and the only thing that worked was other kids picking on her and telling her that it was gross and they didn't want to sit next to her because of it or share materials with her because of it. It was really hard, but every time she came home boohooing because Mary Ellen or Hamish did not want to share a pencil or sit next to her in assembly because they knew she was a nose picker I shrugged my shoulders and said picking one's nose and eating it is disgusting I am sorry your feelings are hurt, but that is the result of your own behavior and your own choices. If you want a different result, change your behavior and make different choices.

Anytime we see this we matter of factly ask that they get a tissue and wash their hands.

I do the same thing in the classroom. It seems to work.
