Alternative to Silver Stars for gymnastics for 4-5 y.o.?

Anonymous
I think I've had it with Silver Stars in Silver Spring. The high per-session cost, the distracted instructors, the fact that of the 40 minutes, my child only gets two turns at each of 3 or 4 stations, the last class (1/3 of which was a silly medal ceremony they do every session)... Anyone have any other gymnastics studios they can recommend?

We are in DC.

I've heard of that but Rockville is too far. We're on the Hill.

I hear ya. I'm looking for an alternative too. That place has so much potential but it's like a mill - no quality whatsoever in the instruction. Awful.

We had the same issue with them. I hated the large groups with two instructors and lots of down time. We do Dynamite too but it is hit or miss with the instructors. Its not that much further. There are a few in PG County but I don't know the names.

Anyone know about Hills gym in Gaithersburg? I know it's too far for us but I'm curious to know of the quality is there... Wish we could convince Silver Stars to improve the way they run the gym! It has sooooo much potential.

Our only experience there was attending a birthday party, but we know two families who love it there.

Same here. I'm looking at Freestate Gym in Gaithersburg, which is closer to my house. Has anyone had experience there?

Some parents are looking for quality of instruction and other parents are looking for a purely recreational outlet for their child. Why not ask someone at the front desk for a recommendation if you are looking for an instructor with a little more experience? Some of the class instructors also coach their team so maybe that would be a better fit.

I also know families/kids who are happy there.

We are very happy there. Have you made your concerns known to Sherri? She should know about your concerns if she doesn't already. As a business owner, I would want to make things right by my customers. I would hope that she shares that sentiment.

For classes/recreational gymnastics, I would try whatever gym is easiest to get to and has classes at convenient times. Most or all will probably let you try out a class to see if your child likes it. And most gyms in the area are going to have perfectly fine recreational classes.

If you think your child is going to advance to a team, then you probably need to be more selective, but also keep in mind that different gyms cater to different types of teams.

No help, but just wanted to say I'm in Loudoun and have tried several gyms here. My daughter is 4.5 and ALL of her classes/teachers are exactly like you describe. Its really frustrating. I've tried multiple times to convince her to try something different (Ballet, TKD, soccer, etc.) but no, she wants gymnastics. Ugh!

I'm a gymnastics coach and if your kid is talented it *should be obvious to even a beginner/rec coach. Rest assured they will get noticed if all the right qualities line up.

Some of the more hard core gyms might not be as fun as a recreational gym so it depends on what you want your kid to get out of the sport. Do you want them to have fun and learn something or do you want them on track for a college scholarship? Granted that is a huge range, but as the PP was hinting at - it is the mentality that comes with certain gyms in the area.

at 4 or 5 your child should be in a FUN gymnastics class like My Gym. there is one in Chevy Chase/Bethesda near the Whole Fields on River Rd. Why would you drive to rockville or gaithersburg?

Great in concept but not true at all. My kid should have moved up but didn't. My kid far prefers the hard core to the boring basics.
