If you want to go to an Ivy -- NCS/STA/HAS/Sidwell are for you; if not -- go elsewhere! |
Jay Matthews says it's easier to get into an ivy from a public school -- less competition -- read "harvard schmarvard" that he wrote |
I think a top school makes it easier for the top students there, but harder on those on the margin, since colleges don't like to take too many students from the same, small high schools. I was told (coming from one of these schools) point blank by an admissions officer at my top choice school that I was waitlisted b/c a stronger student from my hs school applied and they would only take one. Of course for her it was a safety school; totally screwed me.

Duh. Lacrosse is an integral component to many of the acceptances. Many would not be at those colleges if not for the strong athletic high school program. |
Ok you're right -- no need to be so snarky about it |
The poster is right. Sports recruitment really helps get into a top school. The challenge of course is for the student to be good enough to be recruited and noticed. |
If someone is neither a recruited athlete or a legacy or a member of a minority -- it is hard to get into an Ivy without a hook |
The hook is absolutely necessary; you are correct Previous P. |
Since when was there never a "hook" to get into an Ivy league school? You are stating the glaringly obvious! |
There's a great book called "The Hook" which gives people some ideas who aren't as obviously gifted as you must be........... |
Rubbish. We are not talking about gifted here. Simple common sense. |
It was a joke pp. The writer was obviously snide not gifted. |
Once someone has applied to college it is "obvious" to them how the process works. But, the process is not obvious for first-times -- so give people a break! |
Sorry, you are right. There are many on this board who did not go to college. |
Things have changed drastically since most of us applied to college. Especially in the past 10 years. Admittance is very difficult at most good schools, this includes public universities, as well. |
