Also are exempted employees allowed to telework? Or take days off? I am worried I will be called back to work and I would not be able to find the motivation to commute to DC without pay. I would have to pay for parking and aftercare.

Op here. One way or another I’m almost done. Either the government will open and we’ll be done or it won’t be open and we’ll put it on hold. (I’ll be vague here but pretend we’re required by law to publish data by Nov 1st and we have it ready to publish except for a few final steps, but our team that posts things to the website isn’t exempt so it won’t be posted unless we’re open.)

Meanwhile my colleague is legitimately sick (like had to spend some time in the hospital) and my manager didn’t respond to any of my emails Friday (don’t know why), and I’m kind of sick (like this push has me fighting a bad cold). I feel bad for everyone without and end in sight.

Are you being put on furlough when the work is done?

Op here. Yes. The analogy won’t quite work here since I’m making up the situation, but let’s say - since we can’t publish the data until the government reopens - that our lawyers expect a waiver that would let us publish when we reopen. I need another 2 days, maybe 3, to have it totally ready to publish. I don’t know what happens if we get the waiver Monday because it might not be considered urgent anymore but it’s not quite done. Like I don’t know (again kind of making this all up but generally the concept) whether I can work after the waiver for another 1-2 days to finish, or get 1-2 days to publish when we open, or cut some of the steps (let’s say including an appendix with our methodology) that are remaining. Regardless, I probably have 1-3 days before I’m on furlough.

Op again. Luckily I’ve been allowed to telework. I’m not in DC and I don’t think anyone else in field office is exempt (my team is in DC) so don’t think my office is even open.

Then why do people here care?

Because unlike Trump we care for all Americans.

Yes, as demonstrated by "Hate has no place in this house" but celebrating the death of people you hate.

What you really love is the moral posturing that somehow you are morally superior to you know "the deplorables". Or do "deplorables" do not count as Americans?

Trump actually cares more about the common person that you guys.

Odd response after an entire conversation about concerns for healthcare costs among middle and lower income Americans. Like legitimately the opposite conclusion that any sane person would draw.

If democrats fold will gop even vote to open govt? The small govt to drown in a bathtub is taking shape as we speak.

Keeping 70% “open” while shutdown was mistake.

Any Sunday evening guesses as to how long the shutdown will last, given the most current info?

I say keep it shut. We don’t need it.

Well we aren’t going back this week for sure.

But all the incriminating stuff in those files was already shredded/deleted. That isn’t the reason the gov is shutdown.

At least through 10/30. Given house home work session until 10/28. But realistically, I’m thinking through at least the first week of November.

Somewhere between November 10 and Thanksgiving.

It is actually only an issue if it goes on to Jan 2026.

What is significant about that date?
Anonymous
Nope. It will be shut down until mid November, and then we'll see who blinks first at the approach of Thanksgiving.

Op - ps I should have clarified I’m excepted (ie not paid), not exempt.

Keep it closed. Let Trump continue to (legally) cut useless agencies.
