Who in their right minds would stay/ teachers, staff, families not juniors- for 1 more year? |
I should have known better than to post this here. I'm a kid who feels powerless and this is all I can do to save my school. Don't sign if you dont want to. But why take the time to comment and kick someone when they're down? I love my school and 900+ other people who have already signed do too. Keep scrolling if you dont want to sign. It's not difficult to be kind!! |
You did the right thing! We see you and hear you! |
Petition signed. Thank you for sharing and for advocating.

It would give all students the chance to assess and apply to any school during a regular admissions cycle, rather than be relegated to scrambling for any school with spaces remaining after decisions have been made and contracts signed. |
I don’t have insight into the specifics of SSFS and their FA, but the majority of schools who give FA are giving small partial awards to <30% of families. This isn’t like college or the Big3 where kids are getting full scholarships. Partial scholarships give schools leverage to attract the diversity and sufficient class sizes that families expect. Those families receiving aid are still paying a lot of tuition which keeps cash coming through the door. |
Consider checking out WWS in Bethesda. Smaller, but a lot of overlap in terms of students who can thrive there and at SSFS.
Good luck and warm wishes for a soft landing for all the students and families at SSFS. |
Wow. Every school isn’t a great fit for every student. It doesn’t necessarily make the school or student bad.
Moreover, every student at a school that offers AP does not take or thrive in them. If you’re concerned about college admissions, they generally consider the rigor of courseload compared to what is offered at your school. Which means you aren’t penalized for not taking classes not available at your school. And you have more time to be a teen exploring interests and not overly burdened with homework. So, take every negative about any school with a grain of salt. I know many happy thriving grads of WWS. It may not be for everyone, but no need to shut down the conversation that could benefit newly displaced students from SSFS. |
And WWS high school teachers are amazing! In our humble experience. |
And it would give the teachers losing their jobs more time to find another one. And maybe inject a new lifeline into the school. It would have been good if the board would have tried to crowd source solutions. (And btw, maybe they need to go because they failed in their job to secure the long-term sustainability of the school.) Perhaps they could have written to the community to say the school would need to close unless a shortfall of $x million is achieved for the next year. And then they could have solicited ideas. Maybe a big donor could have come in. So many possibilities exist if you remain open to finding solutions. |
I am truly sorry this has happened to the school. But I don’t think the people posting the message was trying to be unkind, just practical. The reality is that a petition like that doesn’t work and there are very few ppl who would feel safe enough to stay. Too many uncertainties. The money might literally run out in the middle of the year (and having to scramble mid year is way worse than this). Faculty will leave as soon as they find something (as they should) even if in the middle of the year (another risk with anyone staying). It’s just not a practical idea to trust the school to stay open a full year even if they say they will because of a petition. Clearly they aren’t going to give you a transparent heads up if things go south with a new plan. You shouldn’t trust your future on anything they say. So my advice to you is that hard though this is, you’re lucky to finally know what the school is up to, instead of the half truths they were feeding you. Your future opportunities will not be dictated by this setback. We live in an area of alternatives and you will land on your feet. Take back control of your life WITHOUT ssfs because they have failed you. Keep the memories of all the good that has happened to you here but look forward and not back. |

It’s not practical. Staff, teachers and students will leave when they find a different opportunity. Some teachers have partners who have been Rif’d thanks to Trump. They need income and wouldn’t blame them if they took their first opportunity to leave. There’s no guarantee they could even have a complete school year. What happens when your Senior cant graduate because teachers bail, the facility isn’t maintained, etc. |
I’m not a troll. The idea is not well thought out. You don’t want to be in the exact situation 6 months from now without the ability to complete the school year. You’re going on the adrenaline of hope not reality. |
Yes totally not a troll. How can you plan a future depending on the very person who let you down? Fool me once …. But fool me twice….?
This situation really sucks for us all. But SSFS can’t be part of our future. |
