Massive home addition causes confusion in Fairfax County neighborhood

Anonymous
There is another house in the same Greenbriar subdivision which was rebuilt as a massive three floor house. I don't think that received this much attention. Perhaps that guy was not Asian?

Give us a link and we'll tell you what we think.

Most neighborhoods don't have an HOA.

Yeah I'm sure this entire neighborhood likes to shit on HOAs and make fun of people who live in them. Jokes on them because this is what you get with no HOA. The county will literally approve anything.

I like his pointed "in our culture we don't send our parents to the nursing home." NO, we build three story accommodations for them with a rabbit Warren of tiny bedrooms, multiple kitchens and baths for them to "play with their grandkids" in. The nerve.

Anybody see the resemblance? He doesn't think anything of this because this sort of thing is totally normal in "his culture".

Stop the racist bit. You just posted a picture of a townhouse in a city next to other townhouses. Not the same situation at all. We do have townhouses and apartments in our cities too, this was a sfh neighborhood.

If it’s the monstrosity I think you’re talking about, the primary difference is that they bumped the existing structure up and into the backyard. It’s ugly, and I’m sure the neighbors hate it, but they stay in their lane. The third level is also technically an attic.

In this case, the 3 story extension is basically in the driveway. It looks exceptionally bad, which is why it’s picking up so much media attention.

New poster, but I believe they are talking about this house: https://www.redfin.com/VA/Fairfax/13228-Memory-Ln-22033/home/9502436

The difference is that it looks like a house vs a giant wall/motel.

His words about culture, not mine hun. It's certainly not "racist" to point out the similarity in cultural architecture styles.

Funny enough, we moved here from Reston. We have no issue with HOAs-we had 2 of them previously in our tiny TH community. Yes, some folks moved here specifically to avoid an HOA. We just were looking for a nice neighborhood with decent walkable schools and some other walkable amenities, at a somewhat reasonable price (which is of course relative in this area).

I'm from a native, ethnic culture, been here over 40 years. This man is a slimeball. He is using his "culture" as some sort of shield to justify all of this. Of course he is not sending his parents to the nursing home - the home belongs to them, not him and he hopes to get it after they pass. This is the way it works. I agree with others here that everyone is in cahoots - the parents and kids. They want to build an apt building and run a commercial operation - albiet all cash with zero taxes paid. GTFO

He knows that this is Generic Whitey's Achilles heel -- hypersensitivity to other cultures combined with insecurity about their own perceived lack of culture. He will get away with it just because of this.

His timing is bad though. He would for sure get away with it in 2021-2022. Now people are recognizing that just knee jerk deference to any non-white person out of white guilt is not actually good policy, and you seem more people, including progressive white people, thinking more critically.

These people are con artists, it has nothing to do with their race and everything to do with their character. The neighborhood is racially diverse and people of all races oppose this idiotic monstrosity that is CLEARLY going to be used as an illegal apartment building or AirBnB. I know some racists have wandered into this thread and the conversation to express anti-Asian sentiment -- it's unfortunate such people exist and will seize on opportunities like this. But it doesn't mean people are just going to roll over and accept this. I think people are mobilizing. If they can't get the construction torn down, I think the building will be watched like a hawk for other violations and reported for everything else. Everyone in the neighborhood has a vested interest in making this go away.

+1
He is trash. And his trying to deflect his immoral and selfish actions by making it about his race does significant harm to those who do genuinely experience racism.

Then again, I can’t stand 1940s-60s homes and love when they’re remodeled into nice homes and get rid of split level plans. I would hate for a remodel to have to keep the split level or the rancher because that’s what the original was.

I would not even ever buy in that overall neighborhood if this is what is allowed.

??? Where? In northern Virginia, many many neighborhoods have HOAs, especially the further west you go into the suburbs.

We don’t have a HOA and are at the mercy of county zoning/code.

We honestly have no idea how this was approved. Pretty sure the man lied on his applications. There is no way he is building this for his family. This is an illegal apartment building.
