2028 Girls Lacrosse

DG back. Appreciate all the engagement on the Coppermine vs. Hero’s post. Pretty clear that most responders favor Coppermine. I have never picked against them. First time for everything. Should be a great game.

Back to the rest of the slate for the final week of regular season games. Last week’s picks held up pretty well—all winners—with the US Club Lax math edging me out in goal differential accuracy by several points. Hard to beat the algorithm consistently.

DC Area Clubs

Pride and Stars have winnable games to solidify their playoff spots at 7-1 and 6-2 respectively.

--Stars -8 vs Integrity (Supposed to be a 5-pointer according to the rankings math, but even though Integrity got their first win over MC Elite last week, I see Stars opening this one up a bit as they tune up for what is looking like a daunting first round playoff matchup).

--Pride -5 vs MD United West (This one is a little tricky, and tempting to just go with the US Club Lax math at 6+. But MD United West kept it close re Stars on the same day they beat MD United East, scored 6 on Sky Walkers, and 7 on 3D MD last weekend. They have some fight in them and are ranked #63. Going to settle on a 5-goal win while solidifying one of the top seeds for Pride, although they will want finish strong heading into the playoffs).

#7/#8 Seed Matchup

--Sky Walkers -6 vs FCA (For the poster who asked what the odds are that Sky Walkers picks up a 4th loss against FCA—I believe they are slim to none. Sky Walkers’ 3 losses were all close games with top 7 teams [M&D Black, Crush, Hero’s Green]; and they remain a high caliber teamed that climbed as high as #9 by the end of last season. They won’t be phased by hard losses the last two weeks, or be caught looking ahead to a potential playoff matchup with Pride. Despite being 4-2, FCA has a -7 Goal Differential and doesn’t have the firepower to compete. Sky Walkers will seize the 7th seed and relegate FCA to the 8th spot).

Playoff implications

--M&D Black -4 vs CCL (M&D faces a must win to make the playoffs, and will do so despite facing a big, physical opponent. CCL held to rankings form against Crush last week. I think they will do the same, with a extra goal shaved this week. M&D Black will NOT allow themselves to miss the playoffs.)

--Crush -10 vs NEMS (Crush will come out firing in a playoff tune up. There is an interesting game within the game here—whether Crush goes all out to focus on limiting Goals Against in order try to win the tiebreaker against the loser of Coppermine/Hero’s and claim the 3rd seed or not. The #3 seed has to play M&D Black in round 1—no easy out—and gets the winner of Sky Walkers and Pride in the semifinals. The #4 seed has Stars in Round 1, but then runs smack into the victor of the Coppermine/Hero’s matchup if they make the semis. So pick your poison. We will know if they chose a strategy if there are long periods of holding the ball in the second half, or some sudden bouts of matador defense. I’m guessing the Crush coach plays it straight and lets the chips fall. Not everyone overthinks this stuff as much as this group.)

The Rest

--MD United East -6 vs 3D MD. (Playing for pride to finish out the season, with all the big tournaments starting in June, MDU East will finish on a winning note. They bounced back last week after two tough losses to the VA teams, with a win against a challenging M&D Red team looking for a breakout win. They will start to get their mojo back in this one. 3D MD will close out a very respectable 4-4 season in NGLL A.)

--M&D West -3 vs NEMS. (M&D West has underperformed against US Club Lax expectations for 3 consecutive games, but NEMS has had even larger spreads of late and is coming off a difficult loss. I think M&D will take this one.)

--MD United West -1 vs Hero’s White (These teams are ranked back to back at #63 for MDU West and #62 for Hero’s White, this one is as close as it gets on the spreadsheet. Both teams probably hoped for a better record at this point in the season. Almost identical goals scored, against, and differential per game. Giving the edge to MD United West as they have had a slightly tougher schedule.)

--M&D Red -9 vs Integrity (A strong season at the A level for M&D’s #2 club. Only lost one game big—to Hero’s Green—while playing Coppermine, Sky Walkers, and MDU East pretty close. Beat CCL and took FCA to the limit on the way. They will finish on a winning note.)

--FCA -10 vs MC Elite (The impressive thing is that MC Elite continues to show up and do their best. FCA will lock down their playoff spot in this one, as they warm up to take a shot at Sky Walkers.)

Most of these girls know each other and are friends and have been gracious in winning or losing. I expect it will be the same on Saturday.

Agreed. I happened to be exiting the indoor facility at the same time as these two teams, they had just finished and Heros had just beat Coppermine. Coppermine walked over with donuts for the Heros girls. They hung out and walked to their cars together. Great to see

What you may not know is the girls from both teams got in their cars and went straight to a homeless shelter to serve hot soup to those in need. These girls are not just the best players; they are the best people. Brava girls! You are all Hero’s in my book.

Some of the Coppermine girls got in their own cars and drove themselves.

And they're off again. Far afield from talking about lacrosse.

The ball was on the tee. Someone was going to hit it.

Ok that was clever and funny.

Thanks for the update on the games this weekend Data Guy. Seems like the parents have been pretty good spectators across the board this year for all the teams. Coaches appreciate this and just know when it comes to the High School tryouts that you as a parent matter and can hurt your daughter’s chances. Keep up the cheering and good luck with your last regular season NGLL game.

If you watch these teams every week, you're a parent and you're biased. If you don't watch the teams regularly, you have no idea what you're talking about.

How’d that work out for ya? DG needs some new data.

Oh look, it's a humble Coppermine parent.

Great game - well played and I thought the officiating was pretty solid, too (they let the girls play and didn’t call every bit of contact). It could have went either way. These two teams are so well matched and it’s great lacrosse when they play.
