Teens and IUD?

Anonymous
My daughter has one of the smaller ones. I think it might be Kylena. She was freaking out before she got it based on all the TikTok videos she watched. She initially wanted to be put under by the Dr talked her into trying Valium (or something similar) to see if that would work. It did and now she doesn't have to worry about it again for 7 years. Hers was recommended to treat potential endometriosis. The downside to the one she got vs the Mirena, which I have, is that it doesn't stop her periods but it does lighten them and make them less painful/more easily managed.

I know multiple people that got pregnant on a IUD

And multiple people get pregnant while on the pill. Nothing is perfect.

I would be really supportive - IUDs are great birth control. I would definitely seek out an OB GYN who would do it under anesthesia or sedation. There’s zero reason not to.

I know more people who had it move than got pregnant. Horrific stores I’ve heard about those things.

My teen expelled her Mirena two weeks after insertion. Her doctor then offered the smaller Kyleena as an alternative but the experience was bad enough DD refused and just deals with her symptoms every month. The insertion was done in a surgical facility under anesthesia and was the only not traumatic part of the whole process.

I wish they would just ban TikTok altogether.

Just say no to sex for teens.

That was fairly miserable (painful periods) and she finally got the Mirena at age 20 or so. It caused none of the nausea that she experienced from BCP, probably because the dose is much lower.

Apparently China uses plain steel IUDs, not sure why we only have copper or hormonal options.

Because they don't have to worry about lawsuits for destroying fertility

OP here. Truly grateful for all the responses. Good information for my daughter to discuss with her doctor. If she decides on an IUD I will help her advocate for pain relief/sedation.

I would say try the pill first. If she doesn’t like the side effects she can just stop it.

Once you get an IUD, you are stuck with it for a while, probably 3 months or so while you give it a chance and hope symptoms improve, than another 1-3 months waiting to get an appt with the OB to get it removed. That is. Long time if it is making periods worse

I had the paraguard for 10 years. Easy insertion and removal. It was great, no problems army all. But it sounds like it might be difficult for teens.

DD switched to IUD after BC pills gave her bad side effects. THe insertion was better than expected with pain meds and she is happy with it.
