How much cash could you access?

Anonymous
$1000 ATM limit one day
$50k if bank was open and they’d let me
$250k same day if they’d take a check (line of credit)
$800k in a week if my financial planner didn’t flag suspicious behavior lol

I've got about $50 in my wallet and at home
24 hours - $200 from the ATM. Probably another $1000 from a bank branch.
1 week - another $3k from some other accounts
1 month - maybe $500 from selling our house (quickly) and liquidating the retirement accounts

I already told the kids that I'm not paying their ransoms; they're going to have to figure that it out based on watching action movies

Same.

I don't know a lot about banking, but I would assume it would take a bank a few days to get a delivery of 6.5 M in cash.

They would require you to break it up into smaller increments over days for this very reason.

You’d end up dead even if you pay the ransom. The murderers would just spend your ransom money after murdering you.

3 days to sell all my brokerage investments,
7 days for 401k withdrawal or loan
30-60 days to get a mortgage refi/home equity loan

Same for me and this would all add up to $2 mill

Really? I don't think JP Morgan will let me convert all my equities into hard physical cash that quickly. (But I could wire millions in 24 hours)

Op here. I didn’t mean it quite that literally. Wire is fine. But if you have the funds not in dollars (ie stocks, foreign currency or other assets, it is what you can liquidate in the time frame).

We were thinking actual cash because OP mentioned paying a ransom. I do not think kidnappers take a wire transfer.

This is a stupid question because it really depends on the bank on what they will let you take out I don't know too many people who have a few million in cash laying around their house.

1 month?

Assume it was for a true emergency where tax consequences don’t matter to you, like a ransom

About $450K easily

I have $7 and I could drain my checking and savings. That’s at $221 right now.

Dognappers accept check. Just make sure it doesn't bounce or else.

Oh, it’s Darren Wint’s friends. The ones they let get away. Of course.

I would just end up dead. I don’t know how to access cash. I don’t use it very much.

But even if you can access it, they’ll kill you anyway. And your children.
