Curfew for 17 year olds

Anonymous
I’m another who sets it by event. If my kid is gojng to be at a friends house late, they will stay over. There’s a few friends she does this with. Mine is home by 11 most weekend nights and rarely goes out on school nights. I think if I had a kid who pushed more, I would set a more standard limit.

That’s nuts. She can’t even drive yet.

What does that matter? She likes going to mall/9pm movies just like I did as a high schooler.

Dave n Busters and then Silver Diner after

Friend’s house to watch a movies

You think I should have my high schooler home at 10pm?

She was at Bar Mitzvahs until 1am in 7th grade.

Wow

What’s wow. My kid also went to Bar/Bat Mitzvahs until midnight or after in middle school.

And they are 16 with a midnight curfew. Most high schoolers don’t even leave to go out until 8pm on Fridays since they have sports practice until 6:30.

What time is your kid’s curfew?

I also think it's shocking. Most kids we know need to be home much earlier unless they tell parents. It's more on a case by case basis but a blanket midnight curfew is unheard of among DC's friends and yes they are really social kids.

Most kids we know have iPhone phone tracking with parents so they know where they are. Also there’s a big difference between 14/15 and 16/17 when kids are driving bc they aren’t needing to be picked up (which usually is the reason for an earlier curfew - parents wanting to get to bed)

What are they doing until 11 on weekdays? Mine are in activities until 10 and most of their friends are doing activities or homework and don't have time for hanging out.

NP and none of that sounds outrageous since the parent knows where they are. We don’t have blanket curfews and my kids were out like this.

My oldest actually needs to be home much earlier now at 16 if he’s in the car with a friend driving. For us, it depends on who’s driving. All of the above is fine if parents are driving. If it’s another teen we’ve wanted him home around 9pm. We still are not comfortable with teen new drivers later at night.

I would say 11:30 weekends, unless it’s a planned event that would justify a later time

We don't have a set time, it depends on when he is scheduled to work the next day. I get that he's almost an adult, but I don't want to deal with the drama of his alarm going off for an hour and then him scrambling to find his work clothing and equipment the next day while he is still living in m house, as it affects the whole household.

We don't have a set curfew either, we decided based on the plans, what's happening the next day, etc., but never past midnight since that's the cut-off for their provisional license.

My kid has no interest in driving. She takes public transportation everywhere because that's what you do in the city. Only 2 of her friends drive, and not with other kids in the car. (Am I the ONLY actual DC resident on here??) So all these answers about the provisional license etc don't work for us.

We do case-by-case. If she's taking public transportation, I need her back by 9-10pm. If she's catching a ride, meh, whenever.

10 to 11 . Some exceptions for later

My 16 year old tells me where she is going and suggests a "head home by" time, and 95%+ of the time I agree to that time. 11pm is probably the most common "head home by" time, but it varies by event.

We use a head home by time instead of a curfew because I don't want her feeling rushed on the drive home to make curfew.

11 if driving, 12 if at friend’s near us.
