The Naviance data is at Graduation (end of senior year). I would expect it to be much higher than end of junior year on average because many more AP and post AP classes and research lab (post AP) is in there. So I’m guessing almost all weighted GPAs go up significantly. Average unweighted gpa at TJ is DEFINITELY not 3.9 junior year. The cutoff for nhs is unweighted 3.5 and plenty of kids don’t make it. |
There is NO WAY the average ever is 3.9 - there isn't grade inflation at TJ. I'd guesstimate the average is 3.5 or lower unweighted. |
+1 |
Average unweighted GPA at TJ has never been 3.9. |
|
If you look at the Naviance scattergram for schools like UVA, VT, and UMD where many TJ kids apply, you will see the horizontal line which indicates average GPA.
VT and UMD: 4.1 to 4.2 UVA: 4.3 to 4.3 So my best guess is the distribution is as follows: 4.0 and below: 15% 4.0 to 4.2: 25% 4.2 to 4.4: 45% 4.4 and above: 15% |
This is weighted? |
| It’s ironic that the best math and science high school in the country, where the kids are trained as statisticians and data scientists by age 14, cannot provide these basic statistics and they remain a mystery to all. |
|
yeah weighted.
re: why they dont disclose this: I suspect its to minimize the pressure on the kids. If u know the average is 4.3 and u are at 4.1, its going to be really demoralizing. |
Weighted GPA especially at TJ doesn't convey who's in the upper quartile, as much as the rigorous coursework that includes post-AP courses similar to: Quantum & Electrodynamics Organic Chemistry Multivariable Calculus Machine Language and AP US History, AP Lit, etc. |
| Is the GPA in the course history on ParentVue weighted? |
How does Naviance work? Is the 4.1 to 4.3 at VT just those kids of TJ that applied? If so, would then think GPA higher for the TJ kids who apply to the MIT etc schools. |
yes |
| It would be nice to know what percentage of top 25 percent decide to go out of state? Assuming here that many may get scholarships so finance (in-state tuition) is not an issue. |
| Barely any get scholarship due to income. Some do get from USC for National Merit |
I see. So most of the top 25% still prefer to go out of state or prefer to stay in-state? I hope they select out of state option only for some T10/T20 school in their Major? UVA/Vtech should cover for most of the major with the in-state tuition. |
