Pre med schools with 20-40% acceptance rates

OP here. We have never been to Pittsburgh. Will definitely check it out this summer. Is the campus in an urban setting inside Pittsburgh?

Will also visit VCU and Christopher Newport.

DS did not like W&M. I thought this would be a great target. He did not like the environment.

My 4.4 GPA kid got waitlisted at Pitt. So not sure it’s a safety.

This is a surprise. When did your kid submit the application? I get the feeling it’s safest to apply there early in the cycle, both for admission and merit aid. Agree that it seems great for pre-med.

Not in September. That’s why we thought she was waitlisted but didn’t want to assume. It was sometime after Christmas I think, but not 100% sure.

Yup, just means General Chemistry will be brutal.

At some colleges the med school applications are supposed to go through a central advising office where they can discourage applicants from submitting in the first place. This improves their med school admit rate.

Not huge, urban schools on the East Coast that are not lottery for admissions is small set.

Your kid can study pre-med anywhere, so your kid should really focus on where he wants to go rather than worry about what is the best pre-med program.

It might be for a kid with great numbers, depending on the school's GPA/SAT range. It won't be for a B+ student.

No, it is NOT. Acceptance rate must be 50%+ for it to be anyones safety. THat's how "high stats" kids end up with no acceptances to anything except a school with 85%+ acceptance rates....they don't actually pick real safeties they want to attend

Your life will be a lot happier and easier over the next year if you and your kid can fall for VCU as a pre-med safety.

It's a great plan---a high stats kid would get excellent merit, much easier to get a high gpa at a school like VCU with a more diverse academic profile, and your kid would be the shining star and able to get research and thus excellent recommendations. And most importantly, not much debt or costs, allowing them to use the saved undergrad $$$ for med school.

His ideal school is a not too huge school in the east coast in an urban setting. His dream school is UPenn. Not sure if he will ED. I have heard from older parents that they wished their kid did not waste their ED on a school that was unlikely to gain acceptance.

Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Rice and BU/BC have highest acceptance rate for medical schools.

Check out Kalamazoo College. Strong chemistry program and high percentage of medical school acceptance or Ivy grad school.

No one should waste their ED on Ivies, Stanford or MIT. Use it to get into other top 20 where ED actually may helps.

Go to Texas for undergrad and set up residency by working and doing own taxes or buying a property, they have bazillion MD/DO programs and 90% spots are reserved for residents.

Not on the east coast, but University of Alabama Birmingham has a great pre-med program. We loved the campus.
