DisneyWorld in May?

Anonymous
I am thinking of planning a trip to Disney next May w/ my then 4 yr old son. I've heard it is a relatively uncrowded time to go. Is this true? Does anyone have any recs for places to stay within Disney that are affordable?

I think anytime of the year at Disney is great...But I would think that early May would be ideal. There are all sorts of great resources out there to help you plan your trip. I really liked www.disboards.com . If you have AAA, you can get good rates on packages. We just went with our 4 year old daughter in July. It was a spectacular age to go. We did the dining plan, and I would 100% recommend it. We stayed at the Animal Kindgom Lodge, which was lovely. I would stay there again in a heartbeat, but that is considered a deluxe property and I am not sure what you consider affordable....they have resorts at all price points, if you go to their website, you can check out all the resorts in detail. That should give you an ideal of what is available. Have fun planning...Disney World was such a great time for us, but it was WAYYY bigger now than it was when my parents took me back in 1980!

We just took our 5 year old and 6 mo old this past mid-May. I can't say I loved the "vacation. "

It was hot but not unbearable, though the day we arrived was very hot and muggy and that luckily happened to be the last day of the heat wave. I would go earlier than May if possible.

Crowds were not too bad. We fastpassed the popular rides and that made it fine. DH found some sample itineraries for small kids online (I think we paid something nominal for them) and we used those to plan our days and know what to fastpass.

We booked through AAA and stayed at the Old Key West. It has kitchens, so we had a food delivery place bring us eggs, milk, cereal, etc so we could do breakfast in the room. This was partly for cost but mainly for convenience. Eating out even lunch and dinner every day became a drag (mainly because of the 6 mo old). I looked into suite hotels outside the park, which were much, much cheaper than inside the park. However, we didn't go that route.

OP here. Thanks for the info. Has anyone found a place (a Disney property or outside) w/ a decent suite setup. We would love to have a one bedroom type setup so I could put my son to bed, close the door and be able to watch TV or talk.

We rented a place at Sheraaton Vistana Resorts...2 bedroom, and it was HUGE and reasonably priced.

On property, I have stayed at the Fort Wilderness Cabins. These are moderately priced and have a nice amount of space. They were just refurbished.

I am going later this year and staying in a 1 bedroom Villa at the Disney Boardwalk Property. This has a 1 bedroom and a separate space with a fold out couch. There are other villa type properties that they have but it is my understanding that these sell out quickly. I have always wanted to stay in the 1 bedroom Villa at Fort Wilderness Lodge but these are always sold out when I look to go.

Since you are planning this far in advance an important reminder. If you want to do character dining, you must call 1st thing in the morning 180 days in advance of when you want it. Mark this on your calendar now - if you don't call 1st thinkg in the morning you will not get the best times and locations.

May is a great time to go. I agree, the weather earlier is better.

You can get pretty good deals inside of Disney on Suites at Saratoga Springs. They have the setup that you mentioned.
Otherwise, the Sheraton sounds nice. If you don't want to rent a car - I would suggest staying on property.

For character meals, there are travel agents out there who do this for your for free. Why should you get up
and make the calls?

OP here. Thanks for the ideas. I don't think we will do the character meals since my brother and SIL who live near Disney and have worked for them say they are overpriced and not good food. I think my DS will be just fine seeing a few characters in the parade, etc.

May is hot, but it's still a great time to go. The water park, Blizzard Beach is a blast.

Did you stay at the Sheraton Vistana Village? It looks like they have a newer complex called the Villages (Key West, etc).
