I think all the hate for private schools comes from posters who wish that their kids could go there but they can't swing it. Boston University and Boston College are great schools but they aren't for everyone due to the cost.

I just told my kid last night that just because you can get into a school doesn't mean you can go there. For our family, we need an acceptance and a reasonable merit/aid package. We do ok and have some saved but not nearly enough, so we need to be aware of the cost of things. Was expecting to cash flow most of it but our income took a dip roughly the cost of in state tuition.

Yes. And to add to that, some OOS publics may be excellent choices that are out of reach for the same cost considerations. DC was interested in both Berkeley and Michigan but ended up at a private that provided reasonable aid. (Did not end up applying to Berkeley because we felt certain it would cost too much OOS, accepted to Michigan but couldn't justify the OOS cost).
