Typically, when they get flash flood warnings in the hill country they are more along the lines of don’t cross this bridge or that bridge. Turn around don’t drown, etc. They are not evacuating warnings.
The owner and director of Camp Mystic was driving back-and-forth between the lower cabins and higher ground taking campers to safety. The water rose too high and too fast and swept him away along with some of those he was trying to save. |
Stop making this about politics. It was neglect on the state, county, camp licensing and most importantly the camp. |
Wow the reading comprehension on this site is in the pits. Poster A makes a mocking post about how people will blame Trump. Poster B replies, "I don't know why you find this funny." A direct callout to poster A, referring to them with "you." Poster C quotes and bolds the "I don't know why you find this funny" comment, replying to it with, "I'm going to guess they support Trump. No compassion." Poster C is saying that the reason Poster A "finds this funny" is because "they support Trump. No compassion." The "no compassion" comment is in reference to Poster A's blah blah comment about Trump vs Harris. It's not a comment about the girls or the girls families. And here we are pages later like some demented game of telephone with people still not understanding the exchange. |
You're both wrong. We're all upset about these children. Don't confuse real people with trolls, OK? There are trolls posts everyday on DCUM. This thread is not exception. Do not let yourselves be taken in. |
He's murderously stupid and responsible for a lot of poor preparation in his state. I hope he doesn't stay in his post. |
You’re blaming the 19 year old counselors for this? |
It’s absolutely about politics. Stop insisting that it isn’t. Politics is life. We can be adult enough to acknowledge that. Many people here dislike Texans. Many people here dislike Christians. Many people here dislike Trump supporters. This IS about politics and it’s ridiculous to deny it. Just accept it and deal with it. |
As opposed to blaming Trump? |
As a central Texan, a Democrat, a lifelong visitor to Kerrville, a former camper there, a prospective retiree to the area, and a friend and relative to many who have been impacted by this - I don't cast blame anywhere. There is so much complicated history and culture in that area of the state that is hard to understand from the outside. The external criticism will only make it more insular.
And blame is beside the point in any case. I know people can't help themselves though. No doubt there will be an implementation of more effective warning signals along the Guadalupe river - like sirens. There is little to no cell service (on purpose) so they may also increase cell tower numbers. However the sirens will only be as effective as the NWS data and the alertness of local officials. Mystic and the other impacted camps are where the kids of the most influential families in the state spend their summer so there will be changes but they will not blame the camps. However, my guess is that at least one or more will have to shutter completely because they are not the most financially stable organizations in this day and age. |
And, the camp should have had radios, sirens and more. The camps are ultimately responsible and all the other camps got out. They should have enough buses to move everyone. |
You just don't know what you are talking about but your assuming and blaming seem to make you feel better so have it. |
I don't understand comments like these. It's like you're thinking politics are a sports team. Politics affects people's lives directly. How you vote affects people's lives. How you vote has real life consequences--many of which are fatal Maybe you've lived an incredibly privileged life that you haven't bore many of the consequences of political decisions, but now dozens of girls bore the consequences of many of their parents' political decisions. It's utterly tragic and heartbreaking. |
Read this page of comments. There are multiple comments about how they don’t care about christians or Texans. |
This is quite the rhetorical leap. (Democrat Central Texan from above.) |
There are 19 year olds in our military who are crewing deadly war machines of all types. In light of their service, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a much smaller degree of responsibility out of camp counselors. Specifically, to have the forethought to think flooding might be a possibility. That is NOT unreasonable. |
