rash guard vs. regular bathing suit?

Anonymous
What are the benefits of a rash guard (or are there any at this age?) compared to a regular bathing suit? Our 16 mo DD is not walking yet (long story), and it is doubtful she will be by beach time this summer. However, she is a terror at crawling, and she probably won't be entertained in the shade for long. Is the rash guard just better protection against sun? Or is it really more for kids who will be mobile and going into the water? Just wondering. Thanks!

A rash guard is for protection from the sun. It is better than using sunscreen. Get a long sleeve rashguard and matching long shorts and your little one can crawl around (with a hat on and sunscreen on the exposed parts) in spraygrounds, beach, pool area, etc. without you worrying.

Lots of places sell them now, but I use www.uvskinz.com for my kids. Lands end is also good.

Skin cancer is on the rise so don't take the risk.

Another good reason to start them wearing long-sleeve rashguards at a young age is that they get used to this. You'll see lots of boys at indoor swimming pools wearing them because that's what they're used to and they feel more comfortable in them.

love then

we don't have to worry about reapplying sunscreen and Exposure to the chemicals.

Totally agree w/ PPs about sun protection. Otherwise you are reapplying the really thick, non-absorbent baby sunscreen frequently if you have to be outside, and it's so much easier just not to have to glop it on large areas in the first place.

When we go to the beach with my friend who is a dermatologist, her kids are wearing full-body type suits. I think they are the Sun Smarties from One Step Ahead. I got something similar this year with SPF50.

OP here, thanks for the feedback. How is the breathability? I'm worried with so much of her skin covered, she'll get really hot...

my dc never complained and they're always wet so they don't feel hot

if they don't know how it feels without it they won't complain about wearing it. start early.

my 3 mo old wears one already.

Does anyone have recommendations for rash guards for babies? Lands End looks like they only have for toddlers and up, and UVSkinz had a very limited selection for babies. TIA!

If you tend to burning, your child may too. We didn't get the rash guards soon enough, and our child ended up blistered one year (in 2 hours in the sun, even with a reup on the lotion). Then we got a rash guard, and she again got blistered this time just on her lower arms. We are switching to long-sleeves, which I obviously wish we had the whole time. If this doesn't work, we are going to keep her in a cave all summer.

We just ordered ours from One Step Ahead. There are a lot of different options:

This is the one we got:

I wear one myself--I don't get too hot. Actually, I feel better (less hot) than when in a swimsuit or tank top because my skin isn't cooking.

DH and I started wearing rash guards after we got them for DS a few years ago. For some reason you don't get really hot. They do sell short sleeved ones, if you're hesitant about getting a long sleeved one. Get a light color. They dry quickly also.

We buy ours from Lands End and they have held up well so far.

I definitely would do a rash guard for a DD versus a bathing suit.

For a crawler you definitely want the full body romper suit thing. It is great for protecting their legs at concrete poolsides or for hot sand plus the sun protection.

I just bought our 1 year old this one--we had something similar for our older two dc when they were little.

They have them everywhere--Target, Old Navy, Carter's, Baby Gap. I like the full bodysuits from Snapper Rock and LL Bean, although the separates are easier for diaper changing.
