Pickings are slimmer, but spots open up because of attrition and class sizes get bigger at some schools. Keep on good terms with the PS teachers, you will need good references. Switch before 9th grade so the child can get used to a new system before grades count.

Yes you can, but it depends on your child. The later you make the switch the more admissions are based on grades and test scores. So the answer ultimately will depend on what kind of student your child turns out to be. Also, you are probably better off starting to apply before the transition to middle schools since a lot of parents in DC go to the local elementary but then look to move to private school rather than public middle school.

Sure you can. Our kids did, and so did tons of our friends. A lot of independent schools are looking for a mix of kids from private and public schools. Just do your homework and check to see which are the bigger entry years, since it varies from school to school. Maret, for example doesn't take kids in 6th grade, but has a big entry year in 7th, whereas some schools have big entry years in 6th and 7th. Others don't take kids in 4th, like Sidwell. Another thing to keep in mind is that after 4th grade, most schools require the SSAT or the ISEE, and that can be a hassle. Others, like Landon and St. Alban's have their own test for 4th grade. On balance, I'd say give it a try; for us it was certainly well worth it, both in financial terms and because our kids loved their public elementary school and we were happy with it also.
