This is the world we live in now where the President can call anyone who disagrees with him scum, but comedians cannot comment on current events that don't align with the Presidents platform.

Look I used to be a Jimmy fan and tend to vote Democrat, but his whole stick inappropriate, especially given that this young person turned out to be far left. He is a comedian, and it wasn't funny and he was jjudst trying to push his own political agenda by claiming those crazy MAGAs are pushing theirs. He's divisive. You watch late night TV to unwind. Plus, didn't he insist he was leaving the country if Trump came to office? Well.

I'm so sick of people saying this kid is "far left". What does that mean. He wants universal health care and bike lanes? OH, and he just happens to be so nuts he also thinks shooting people is okay? That behavior is not influenced by political ideology. It's totally psycho. Stop lumping him in with liberals/Democrats who advocate for gun control.

Thank you. There is nothing in "far left" ideology that advocates for shooting people you disagree with. The opposite -- progressive advocate for stricter gun laws to prevent shootings like the one that resulted in Kirk's death. AOC and Bernie aren't out there celebrating guns or gun violence, or encouraging their supporters to act violently towards the right. The left advocates for achieving its policy goals by following the rules of our democracy. Which honestly hasn't been very effective lately, but the left clings to the idea that democracy is not something you should be able to hit pause on when it serves you.

This kid isn't MAGA but he's not representative of leftist politics either. If anything, he represents the culture of online political discourse, which is in the toilet. And there are people across the political spectrum engaging in that culture and we should be concerned about all of it.

Then why are so many people celebrating his death?

They aren't. You are confused because you think anyone who insists on acknowledging that Kirk was a hateful, cruel person who relished making liberals angry is "celebrating his death." They aren't. They just don't want to deify him.

There are some fringe people actually saying they are glad he's dead. I think these people are deeply misguided in the same way that the MANY people who claimed J6 was a peaceful demonstration were misguided. But notice how I never called for the people who mischaracterized J6 to be fired and silenced? I just criticized them.

If you can't understand the nuance in the prior two paragraphs, I don't know how we're ever going to resolve this.

One must spend only 5 minutes on social media to see people celebrating this horrific act of violence. My eyes don’t deceive me like your heart deceives you.

So what to all of that? Even people who never even listened to Kimmel once and have no opinion about him at all understand the problem here. Does any of what you wrote give the U.S. government the right to threaten to pull licenses from ABC or to file expensive frivolous lawsuits to try to bankrupt people?

The government now controls speech. Only government approved right wing hate speech will be allowed.

That’s not the point. Our President is controlling what we see on TV and read in the news with his lawsuits, interference and constant jabs that causes his followers to lose trust in anyone other than who he says is ok. Does that sound like a democracy to you?

DP: Are they people you personally know? Because if not, you have no idea who is actually posting what the algorithm is feeding you. This is internet 101 -- know your source before you get inflamed by what you are seeing. If what you are seeing causes an immediate negative reaction -- don't trust the source. Do better research. Also, ask yourself why hateful things are appearing on your algorithm. I'm not seeing it on mine. The internet gives you back what you look for.

I have spent a lot more than 5 minutes on social media in the last week and I haven't seen anyone celebrating the killing. Perhaps the problem is in the people you are following on social media.

If I saw someone celebrating a murder, any murder, even the murder of Charlie Kirk, a man I detested, I would simply unfollow them. My instinct would not be to call their employer and get them fired. Because I believe in free speech even when I disagree with it. That's why when Charlie Kirk was alive, I handled the vile, hateful things he said by simply ignoring him.

Trump and republicans need to issue Executive Orders on what type of speech is legal in this country. We know criticism of Israel, any mention of Kirk, any criticism of Trumps and trans/gay stuff is against the law.

What other speech is outlawed needs to be defined. Should Hunter Biden’s 12 fake laptops be off limits or should every Fox employee who pushed the “election was stolen” be punished? Certainly the Epstein files that contain criminal information on republicans and Trump must be suppressed.

This is a big reach-did you actually listen to that episode? He said in that same episode that the attack was terrible.

A reasonable compromise: Trump has weaponized the government to push his ideology and that had a hand in this, and also that Kimmel was a partisan hack who had alienated a lot of viewers and was no longer funny, similar to Colbert.

Regardless, we're in a dangerous situation. I was having dinner with a friend last night who stated simply "the next election probably has a 50/50 chance of being rigged" and "after Trump, Vance will be the President, and civil wars tend to happen under the successor to the original personality cult." Seems reasonable.
