PP here. I feel like there are a few people in violent agreement in this thread - like you and I. I was not one of the posters that mentioned Nuland before. I agree that the proposition that she magically brainwashed the Ukrainians is laughable, but it seems to play in Russia. I don't have a lot of expertise in this area, but the evil powerful woman making puppets of anyone opposed to Russia seems to be a favorite trope of theirs. Then again, I was mistaken for Nuland once in what might have been the most DC pick up line ever, so I have a soft spot for her. |
Yep. There are a lot of ridiculous things that play in Russia, and most of us here agree it's ridiculous, but there's at least one poster here who is either weirdly and genuinely convinced by the ridiculous Russian talking points, or who is somehow invested in trying to push the ridiculous Russian talking points on us, even though most of us find them to be ridiculous. |
No one said Ukrainians are Russians, stop fighting imaginary fights. Again, for the slow ones: Simonyan=ethnic Armenian. Number of people who think Simonyan is an ethnic Russian = zero. Excepts DCUM dummy. |
|
Don’t know how I would react to that. |
DP.... i'd consider her to be a Russified Armenian, one who'd probably be too cowardly to say anything if Putin went after Armenians and would continue to cheer Russia on if Armenians were genocided. Similar to how Ramzan Kadyrov is still a Z fanboy despite all of the horrible things Russia did to the Chechen people. |
I'd think it to be pretty bold to hit on an Ambassador with pick-up lines |
What does it matter what you'd consider her? DNA doesn't lie. Margarita Simonyan is an ethnic Armenian, partnered to another ethnic Armenian, Tigran Keosayan. Both are Russian citizens and ethnic Armenians. No one thinks they are ethnic Russians and the poster who came out with "everyone thinks she's Russian but she is in fact Armenian!" is like a stupid child telling people two by two is four with an air of the greatest discovery ever Now, two more points in your post that need addressing. You know who looked the other way as Armenians were being "genocided"? The entire world, including the U.S. You know who is looking the other way as Azerbaijan is starving and freezing the Armenians of Artsakh? The entire world, including the U.S. You know who is enjoying a red carpet in both the EU and the US? Ilham Aliyev, who is leading the policy of Armenofobia and starving the people of Artsakh. So don't talk to me about Armenian genocide, their suffering is just a rhetorical device to you, to any of you. Finally, you expecting Russian citizens of Armenian descent to side with the country of ethnic origin against the country of their citizenship is a form rank bigotry. Do you expect Italian Americans to side with Italy if America ever attacks Italy? Do you expect Jewish Americans to side with Israel instead of the U.S.? How did you think Iraqi Americans felt? How did Libyan Americans feel? How do Palestinian Americans feel watching the U.S. lawmakers encourage the devastation of their homeland? Do you suspect of them of double loyalty? Congratulations, you're a bigot who thinks only "American" Americans can be trusted. |
I don’t blame them, I would rather have American or any of the EU citizenships than Russian, too. However they needed to be realistic. The West wasn’t going to welcome them with open arms. Russia wasn’t going to let go of what it considered theirs. This whole illusion of Ukraine being Europe (or worse, a cynical lie by certain politicians) is what brought Ukraine to a sad state it is in now. Is it fair that it can’t leave Russia’s orbit, at least without major destruction? No! But is it true? Certainly yes. |
Wow. Talk about completely missing the point and going off on a wild tangent with a whole lot of assumptions. And now we're "racist" to boot. You're a real piece of work. |
This is wrong. The West had some legitimate concerns, yes. Ukraine had problems, but they were not insurmountable problems. Membership was definitely not off the table, it was far from a "cynical lie." Meanwhile, Russia's other former SSRs and satellite states are further distancing themselves from Russia. Ukraine is taking the brunt, but I doubt Russia can survive trying to do the same to any other state that wants to pull itself out of Russia's orbit. Russia can barely manage a war on one front, let alone more than one. |
I don't know that I agree with this. We can quibble about what "open arms" means here, but the fact that the West was rooting for Ukraine to succeed/stand on its own is exactly the issue. Too bad if Putin has a different interpretation of "his" than the rest of the world. |
I know no one likes to be called a moron; the solution is not to say moronic things like "everyone thinks Simonyan is Russian but she isn't!" Maybe you'd like to explain why it is not bigoted at all to expect Russian citizens of Armenian descent to side with Armenia instead of Russia. You should know that was the exact type of thinking that drove the Turks to exterminate the Armenian community in 1915 - because the Turkish government thought the loyalty of their Armenian subjects could not be trusted. Congratulations, you're a true heir to Talaat Pasha. |
They were brainwashed by their own cynical lying opposition who made it seem like EU is going to accept Ukraine tomorrow and give it free money and Ukraine will be second Germany or something Russia played its part too, by instilling a thief who Yanukovich is. Their HR policy is still from the soviet party committee times. But I don’t think one can deny that there was an opposition supported by the west which tried to lure the simpletons into believing EU is a possibility and will be achieved with no effort or sacrifice. |
DP, but this false dichotomy has become a point of contention only lately, after Russia has slighted Ukraine so much. Of course now no one in their right mind will remind Ukrainians of a simple truth that genetically the two ethnicities are pretty much the same. |
