Has anyone been there for a family vacation? I've read a lot on DCUM about Cape May, Rehobeth, Ocean City, etc. but nothing about Kiawah. We're considering it for a week vacation, renting a small house on the island and spending some time in Charleston as well. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Like whether or not driving or flying makes more sense (we have a 3 year old and 10 month old). TIA! |
Kiawah is fantastic. You will love it. I hate long drives so would never drive but alwaysfly and rent a car. |
Just got back from Kiawah 2 days ago. It is a great place, very unspoiled, and quiet. But also more expensive than other beach towns. biking, beach and fishin are the only real activities.
We drove; wasn't much fun, but we wanted a car and wanted all of our "stuff." Which part of the island are you renting on? |
I grew up near Charleston and LOVE Kiawah. It's beautiful and relaxing, and Charleston is amazing. You'll love it. |
We're renting on Inlet Cove - beautifully remodeled cottage - we can't afford the beachfront homes. So is it really worth the extra effort getting there? If we rent a house in Rehobeth, much shorter distance, is it the same? We haven't been to either so it's hard to compare. Thanks PPs! |
I'm the PP who grew up outside of Charleston... but I have never been to Rehoboth so I can't compare them. My South Carolina snobbery insists that Kiawah must be better, but that is purely a personal bias! |
I am the 23:24 poster. We absolutely love Kiawah; haven't been to Rehobeth in years. That said, we also have a 3 YO and 4 month old and think that Rehobeth is likely all you need, unless YOU really want something different. But, as you probably know, vacations with kids at these ages is really all about them and the convenience is huge. Also consider that Kiawah was very very hot, so I stayed indoors most of the time with my 4 MO old. Heat index of close to 100 and over 100 almost every day. |
I lived on Kiawah for a few years. Very kid friendly. I drive from DD to Charleston often. It is about 30 mins further than Charleston. We have two little ones. We leave very very early, stop at the 1/2 way mark, eat breakfast and then only have 4 hours to go. (8 hr drive). Have you considered beaches closer to Charleston? I would try Folly Beach. Much closer and so nice. No golf course on the island but if your are not going down there for that, it is a better place. Have fun. |
Kiawah is one of the few remaining "living" beaches that I have been to in recent years. Because they were wise enough to build behind the dune line, the beach has not eroded horrifically and hasn't become just dead sand because of constant refills, etc. |
