Wine in fondue?

Anonymous
I'm 11 weeks, and I was planning on making a swiss fondue for New Years (yum!). It it does call for some white wine in it. Is that just as bad as drinking a glass, or does the cooking somehow make the alcohol content lower?

The boiling point of the wine is low, so even the stove top cokking should burn most if not all of the alcohol away. If there is any alcohol left after the melting and bubbling of the cheese prior to pouring into your fondue pot, the amount per serving would be miniscule. Don't worry, have the fondue.

Most fondue uses the non pasteurized cheeses which may be more of a concern for listeria. I wouldn't worry about a little wine but if you want 0 alcohol then you may want avoid it. I don't think fondue boils to a point to remove the alcohol.

I had a craving for fondue in my first trimester - and now your post makes me want it again! Wine (especially cooking wine) in cooked foods is fine because the cooking burns off the alcohol content. As for pasteurization/listeria concerns - any swiss cheese you buy at the supermarket will be pasteurized so don't worry!

1st pregnancy- i stayed away from alcohol tl 2nd trimester and only maybe 3 cups.. second pregnancy- still waited til 2nd trimester but was more relaxed- in europe or asia- alcoho; is part of everything- i still drank hardly anything but just learned to relax if i had a sip- a glass.. anyway, yes- you were 11 weeks but do you know there a lot of women in asia etc that just do'n't stop any alcohol at all and the baby is just fine? but no matter what- take care from now on and do watch it- but one time is not a big deal.. hugs

Cooking with wine is not the same as drinking it by glass. I wouldn't (and have not) even bat an eyelash over cooking with it. I still use red wine in pasta sauces, white wine in my spinach and shrimp risotto, etc. while pregnant just as I did prior to.

If it makes you feel better just remember that there are plenty of women who are advised by their OBs that it is ok to have a glass occasionally and they have had healthy babies.

OP here- thanks everyone for the responses. Glad to hear it's not too big a deal- that's what I thought, but wasn't sure. I'm just going to enjoy my New Years fondue and not worry!
