And yet April or May is ok eventhough the published cut-offs are September?
Maybe they should just change the cut-offs to more accurately reflect reality so applicants know where they stand? |
Here in MD we have an official red shirt program. It is called Pre-First. It is a grade in between K and 1st. Many summer brithdays go here before they go to 1st grade. I have seen some children as old as 7 in this class. They would then be 8 in the 1st grade. All the Baltimore area private schools have pre first. |
Wow, this is like the scene from 'This is Spinal Tap'...10 wasn't loud enough so we created an 11. |
Interesting. Schools are in athetic leagues . Georgetown Prep was removed from the IAC for football and plays many schools in the Baltimore area. Ever see an eigth grader get in the car with a permit and drive ? I have so they can't be summer birthdays. |
Is this your idea of data? Geez... |
New poster here: why do I hate redshirting? It feels like cheating. Someone has to be the youngest in the class and it is better if they are the youngest by at most one year. Someone has to be the oldest, but if they are older by more than one year it appears to give a distinct advantage to them, at least in the early years, which is exactly why many parents are doing redshirting their kids. A bit like taking performance enhancing drugs! Providing an unnatural advantage! |
I should also have added that it bothers me that on the face of it, the kids who are most likely to cheat (because that is the message they are getting) will also be the oldest in the classroom. |
Oh, and I have decided that if anyone says anything mean to me on the board, I am going to ask every 'redshirted' kid I meet " why are you behind?" |
haha. Might be as much an indicator on which schools have more radical redshirts and the IAC response to level the playing field. IAC includes Landon and STA. And Baltomore privates have beaten Prep recently. So it might be like fresh in collge playing high school teams. Grow up . The private schools are not releasing ages on rosters or class lists. |
You'll be asking that of my kid who's top of her class at one of the most elite schools in the country... I doubt she'll worry much about your opinion. |
PP 12:03-- I can't believe you took the bait. |
Of course she's at the top of her class! Wasn't that the point? |
Funny comment. There's a thread about ages and velcro shoes. When my oldest child was in pre-K the velcro shoes became a big NO during the school year. Kindergarten was worse. A group of boys including several redshirts some of whom had older brothers plus were very socially aware made life extremely difficult for the guys in velcro. No funky brands or character shoes. It had to be stuff like new balance or adidas. Just one way older and more mature can impact the younger ones. |
And my child will respond "I'm not behind, but my parents gave me an extra year to enjoy childhood because unlike the speed of light, which is a constant, living things mature at variable rates. Forcing a flower to grow to quickly just results in a leggy plant that soon fades." |
I think it has more to do with the older brothers than the redshirts. I see this in my son's pre-school class and it is usually the kids who have older siblings. Seems that the older siblings tease the younger siblings and the younger siblings take it out on the classmates -- no matter if they are older or younger. It is funny because the kids that my son has naturally become closest with are all only children or the eldest children in their family. |
