Why do some private sector workers hate Fed workers so much?

I only have experience with IT side of things and it is utterly dysfunctional process wise which allows a lot of people to get paid without getting any real work done.
People who don't know better will believe your bs about fed IT. The truth is that fed IT is responsive and up to date. The fed gov in general is well run. The truth is the fed has been modernizing continually.

No worries, even Elon Musk was expecting to find a fed full of waste. But in the end he found it was a pretty tight ship and went slinking off.

To answer OP; this is why:

It’s subtle but PP is right. This sort of smearing campaign is why people dislike Fed employees.

It’s from political and business interests — they find regulating pollution, discrimination, risky behavior troublesome and it’s federal employees implementing congress’s rules.

My large agency fed IT is pretty much completely contractors. Only the SES in charge is a fed. I’m convinced these contracting companies are making $$$, not paying their employees well and upcharging on everything. It’s a terrible contract.

Ding ding ding. Congress is the reason feds are dysfunctional. They make insane laws that are often unfunded mandates (my statute I work off of is). And then Feds get blamed for implementing these laws. I would love for my statute to be re-written.

Be careful who you accuse of looting money. Trump just gave $20 bn of our tax dollars to Argentina in a failed attempt to bail them out of their bad policy choices because he likes the president there

Huh? Elon Musk did a top to bottom audit of the federal government with complete power to look over anything and an army of true believers to do the looking. He didn't find any looting.

Let's have him do that to any private company, like maybe where you work. Do you think your company will pass?

Bottomline, the reason he and maybe you expected the fed gov to be full of fraud is because you know what private companies are like.

I do t hate anyone but there is a sense that you’re being paid for not doing a lot and have a lot of vacation days.

Where did this perception even come from? Most Feds I work with have so much work that they don’t take their vacation time. Many are in the “use or lose” bucket of time because they don’t take time off. Feds early in their career only get 13 days of vacation for the first 4 years! That’s nothing,

My friends and my spouse who work for major companies get a lot more vacation time than Feds. Feds get the same amount of vacation time as cops and firefighters.

Do Feds get better vacation than minimum wage workers? Sure. But Feds are significantly more likely to have college and masters/phds than the general population. Feds are well educated.

This. I often see comparisons between the federal workforce and the overall US workforce, which is absurd. Most fed jobs require college degrees and very many require advanced degrees. We should be comparing to a basket of private companies like legal/medical corporations, financial/accounting firms, aerospace companies, etc. Federal benefits don’t look exceptional in that comparison.

Who are you talking about, Congress? They’re getting paid with government money without doing any work.

Yeah, because stupid people like you believe all the BS your right-wingers push about “lazy Feds”.

My private sector friends and family have sooo many more vacation days than I do. A lot of private sector is shut down the week or two around Christmas and new years. I often can’t take Christmas Eve off even if I wanted to because we need “coverage” in our Fed office. I often have to work the Friday after thanksgiving for the same reason, whereas it’s a holiday for almost every other person I know. Dh and I always are in use or lose because we can’t take all the vacation time we want. And if we do take it, we’d never be able to get our jobs done since we’re chronically shorthanded (exacerbated this year).

Anonymous wrote:As someone who was in the private sector government contracting for over 30 years, I respected most of my Fed clients. They were diligent public servants. A handful of my clients during my time were horrible. Treated the private sector with disdain. Thought we made a ton more money. Made comments at meetings with Feds from their agency/dept. and other Feds that Feds needed to watch government contractors very closely as "we are their to steal from the government." It's like me saying "well I pay for your salary with my taxes."

Most Fed workers went directly from school to their Fed job and never worked in the private sector. They had a safe and secure job. Hard to fire those underperformers, and they knew they had a job for life. That doesn't happen in the private sector. We are at-will employees. We don't have a union. We don't have pensions. Don't have healthcare for life after we retire.

What is happening to Fed workers now is horrible! This is not the way to make Fed government more efficient. Change the laws and policies to make the government run more efficiently.

I am retired now. Got out last November after the election, as I saw this coming. Feds are being furloughed, and contractors are being fired as Fed contracts are being cut. It's going to get worse.

What's funny (and sad) at the same time is I saw a recent post on LinkedIn by one of my recently retired former FED clients (one of the ones who despised government contractors) looking for side-consulting FED work. This person was a FED for 35 years!

F him!
