OP here. Just finished it last night. It's annoying that I've missed out on 15 pages of conversation while we watched the show - I didn't want to read any spoilers. That's why I'm not a fan of Netflix shows. |
I just finished it yesterday too OP. I liked it overall. A few thoughts I had:
*I didn't like Nick at all. He was an awful person. It just goes to show how people are glued by old friendships. Kind of similar to sibling relationships. *I liked Ginny. I think her friends were ridiculous cliches though. Maybe it's to show that she doesn't really belong in that world and that's why she chose Nick. She was a dental hygienist and most dental hygienists I know are not flighty, nor are they in fluid relationships. Maybe that's why the writers picked that as her career. *How they cast Lila was odd. If you know hedge fund managers children, they are not like her. I'm guessing they were showing that she was more a product of being raised by Anne. *I liked Anne, but she is not a hedge fund wife either, lol. I think they purposely made her frumpy looking with her clothing and hairstyle. *I'm a Tina Fey fan, so I naturally liked Kate. Her relationship with her husband was fine. I'm guessing like a post before that she is some kind of lawyer or CFO or something of that nature. *I liked Danny. I like the scenes where he was one on one with the other characters. *They could have cast Kate's husband differently. I like Will Forte and he was probably cast because of SNL and 30 Rock, but they didn't have a lot of romantic chemistry. Maybe someone like Paul Rudd or Zach Galifianakis. I'm just spitballing people who can play likeable goofballs pretty well. *I agree that Tina Fey and Steve Carrell are aging pretty well. *As a 50 something person, it was nice to see a Gen X series that wasn't just about the kids. |
I agree with all this, except if they had cast Paul Rudd, as epic as that would’ve been, the target audience of women is obsessed with Paul Rudd, and I don’t think that we would buy that they would be having marital problems and that she wouldn’t be doing anything but jumping his bones every chance she got. Only slightly kidding, but he’s almost too appealing for this role and I thought Will forte did a good job of being believably appealing and frustrating. I will say, I am really pissed that Nick did not have to deal with his choices. I would have loved to see them flash forward a year or two when all the adventures have stopped and Ginny is deep into being a new mom and all that entails. Realistically, she probably would’ve ended up closer to Ann after she and Nick separated. Nick has proven he has no interest in being in the trenches. |
OK, maybe not Paul Rudd. He would have probably been more of a star than a supporting character lol. |
Nick just left a lot of destruction in his wake. I doubt the baby will be financially supported. Ginny was probably newly pregnant, so I'm sure his will wasn't updated.
If I were Anne, I wouldn't be interested in supporting the baby. I'd rather the money saved during the life we built go to my own children. Also, the DCUM trope plays out in this series. There aren't a lot of good choices for single women after 30 lol. |
+1 The baby is a fascinating twist because you just don't get pregnant by accident in your 30s. Ginny should have waited until marriage or had a better plan if Nick knew, and if not, it's her bed to sleep in for trying to trap him with a baby. I would hate a second season where Anne supports the baby. 🤮 While Ginny was a surprisingly likeable character and level-headed, a baby without a plan is not, so I can't say I support that about Ginny. |
Maybe, but I thought they did a good job of showing trade-offs that both Jenny and Nick had to make. Older men want a young fertile woman, but the problem with young fertile women is that, they are young and fertile. sooner or later they’re probably going to want a baby. Especially the ones who are willing to put up with the stepdaughter and ex-wife and go on family weekends. It seems like Jenny had a baby and family on the brain. The ones that don’t want babies tend to couple up with people their own age and become DINKS. And not have to deal with the baggage of the ex and step kids. Nick played stupid games and won stupid prizes. The daughter telling him that Jenny was Mom in a younger body was spot on. He was going to run into the same issues within a year. That’s why I think that relationship was particularly unrealistic because Jenny seemed too smart for that. Most women as smart and together as she was could see Nick for what he is, which is going through a phase or never willing to grow up and never able to be happy. |
Were they even fully divorced? He jumped right into his relationship with Ginny and that was only 8mons. So they were separated for less than a year. At the end of parents weekend Anne tells him “when you get the bill..” so sounds like they were still legally married. I think Anne is too kind and would help support the affair baby. Even if it wasn’t in his will |

Yeah, I wondered about that too. They probably didn't even start divorce proceedings immediately after the first "season." |
Did everyone see they greenlit Season 2?

Oh I’m excited - with all its flaws I still really enjoyed it! |
I'm kind of telling on myself here, but (through 6 of the 8 episodes), I've identified most with Jack. During the college visit, he kept making bids to connect with Kate, and she wasn't having it. (In fairness, she did get him a sandwich - with, apparently, nothing he liked on it; and was, eventually, making an effort to have sex with him when he started whining about his hip.)
The more dramatic and troubled member of the friend group were getting more attention, so he was mostly invisible. (I haven't watched episode 7 or 8 yet, and I've gathered that there is a more major incident brewing between Kate & Jack.) |
I liked the show a lot. We then watched the original movie on Netflix. Quite different, the new show is a lot better. Its interesting to see what they kept from the original - some of the lines, etc. |
