Columbia is a peer school to Emory et al. Is it a "top Ivy?" Of course not, and there's nothing wrong with that. |
I’m sorry you don’t like how my company hires. We don’t see any difference between grads of Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia |
No problem as to how YOUR company hires. Just don;t generalize it to how many other companies are hiring in today's world. |
STEM/ engineering students at Columbia are recruited by silicon valley AND Wall Street. |
I'm the PP who initially expressed concern about the heat and humidity. Of these three schools, Rice is by far my personal favorite -- apart from the weather. The heat and humidity in Houston make me ill, even in the relatively "cool" months. I prefer cold weather. Others might find the weather at Amherst or Columbia too cold and much prefer Houston's warmth. It's a completely individual thing, but it's something I thought the OP might want to consider. Houston is likely to get hotter and experience more flooding in the future. |
There’s HYP. There’s Columbia and Penn. And then there’s Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell. Emory is nowhere near any of those schools. It can hang out with Vanderbilt and Washington U on a good day. |
So are students from Rice and CMU. Again, all I am saying is you can no longer say Columbia is definitely superior to Rice. Not always. People might be very surprised if a student chooses Rice over Harvard or Princeton. But no one is stunned if today a kid chooses Rice over Columbia. |
Brown = Cornell > Dartmouth = Penn > Vanderbilt = Columbia = WashU Columbia dropping friend, read the news |
This is funny. |
OP. We are down to columbia vs rice. Not an engineer. Maybe econ. Maybe stats. Thoughts. |
Columbia is having issues - end of school year can’t come quick enough smh |
You really should visit if you can. They're both pedigree schools. They'll both open doors. Though if you want Wall Street, Columbia is the better option. That's not really the Rice vibe. It's a more chill atmosphere, a little nerdier. It's bright students doing their thing. STEM is probably what they are most known for, but they are solid in everything. It's a comfortable school with a residential college system, so it's easy to feel part of a community. It is a very rigorous school though. No one is gliding through Rice. Columbia is Columbia. It's in the news 24/7 presently. Every potential student has to ask is that the environment they want to be a part of. For some it's a plus. And for some it's a huge red flag. The tensions there between protestors and Jewish students and those that just want to ignore the noise and grind are very real. You either want to be a part of the cacophony or you don't. Even in the best of circumstances, Columbia is not chill. But I think the fractures that are evident on the Columbia campus are going to be long lasting. |
This is very easy - but obviously OP debating. Only OP knows. Let OP/student follow their heart. |
Emory is better than WashU and peers of Vandy and Cornell. Columbia is a step above but not as much as you may think. Columbia used to be a half step below HYPSM now its closer to Emory than to Harvard. Sorry. |
Emory??? Hahaha! You are so funny! Nothing to be sorry about. I needed a good laugh! |
