ie: gucci, chanel, etc... i'm considering buying a pair of shoes i love but they have the logo in big letters on top of the shoe where you can see it. |
I think it's kinda tacky-- low-class, like you have something to prove. But I also came down against animal prints on little girls (or anyone, really) and against child modeling. And the flamers have made it clear that I'm an old stick-in-the-mud. |
I'm curious as to what people have to say about that. I can't stand buying things that are labeled like that but my tastes don't generally run to the mainstream. But it must be okay with some people -- people keep buying this stuff! I'm curious as to how other people think about it. |
Depends on your opinion about these sorts of things......don't you have your own opinion on this? Or do you need to post on an anonymous forum and ask strangers what you should do? Seems like this post was just started to get a rise out of people. Me, personally, I think the logo stuff is obnoxious - but I did not need to ask anyone what they think my opinion should be on the issue! |
The only opinion that matters is yours. Are you comfortable with it?
With the exception of the RL "horsey", I personally do not buy any clothing or accessories that have noticeable logos or identifing writing. First, I think it is free advertising for the designer and second I like that I am the only one who knows what I am really wearing. I once broke down, broke the rule and bought an LV logo bag. Two weeks later I got robbed in Plaza Major. A week later my mother became the proud owner of a LV bag. That said, I never think that someone who does it being pretentious - its just a matter of personal taste! |
Be nice. All our positions are influenced by the opinions of those around us. We don't always ask in such a forthright manner, but I'm sure you'd be fooling yourself if you thought that you've never changed your mind based on popular perception. Example: I used to love Birkenstocks. Thought they were the bee's knees in terms of comfort, and pretty cute, too. Then they became (or I became aware that they were) synonymous with dorky hippy fashion, and suddenly, I didn't love them as much. And I'm not much of a follower, compared to most. Just one more way that we shape and are shaped by society. |
It is a matter of taste, but I tend to think it is a bit tacky. I can understand a little logo, somewhere on the product.

Gucci, Prada, Fendi and LV and their ilk are still doing brisk business so it would seem that a lot of people disagree with you. |
I would never buy an LV purse with the initials all over the leather because its just not my taste (yes, I find it tacky) but what about items like Tory Burch shoes where you only know they are Tory Burch if you know her logo (the big gold cut out medallion on the top of the shoe)? I am torn on those items and I do like her shoes. I buy Coach bags and they have the little leather tag with the Coach imprint but that seems very discreet to me. My DS and DH wear Izod and RL polo shirts but I feel like those symbols are so ubiquitous that they have lost their status and/or tackiness and they are small (the new RL shirts with the HUGE polo player is awful!). |
Since you asked, yes, I think it's tacky and an example of conspicuous consumption. But then, I won't wear anything with designer names or initials on it. I have lots of friends who've spent small fortunes on Louis Vuitton and Gucci though. And I do secretly chuckle at them once in a while. |
I think it depends...do you have a pic |
I think it's tacky. If the logo is that big, t also seems fake, so why pay extra for something that looks cheap? |
Hmmm, I have a really cute Tory Burch bag...and Tory Burch flip flops too. Guess I'm tacky. |
Cheesy. |
I think it looks awesome if you're a hip-hop star. Otherwise, lame. Also, why do people need to have expensive handbags for example -- I don't get it. What's the appeal of this? Personally, I think it looks low-class. |
