I have a 13-month-old son and we would like to start trying for another baby soon. I went off the pill in August (5 months ago) and I have not had my period since AND I am not pregnant. I went to see my OB and she said it was probably just due to going off the pill. A hormonal thing, I guess. She said it could take up to 9 months go get my period back. She suggested that I try 5 days of progesterone (10mg) to see if that helped bring it on. It didn't. I am going to try it again next week.
I think I am still ovulating, so I am assuming I could get pregnant. Does anyone know if it is OK to still try? Is there a greater risk of miscarriage or is it unhealthy for me or baby to get pregnant after not having period for so long? Has anyone been in a similar position and still gotten pregnant after not having period for several months? |
Honestly OP there seems to be several things that aren't right about your post and your OB's reaction concerns me. Even the conservative of doctors usually "jumpstart" your period after 90 days if it hasn't returned after going off the pill. This would be done with Provera, not pregesterone. I assume your lack of period is not due to breastfeeding, correct? After having a child it can take time to get your period back - but your baby was born 13 months ago and generally after going off the pill it should return within a few months at most.
Second, it is rare to ovulate and not have a period. After having a child you would ovulate roughly 2 weeks prior to getting your period, but you wouldn't likely ovulate on a regular basis without one. What makes you believe you are ovulating? As to whether you should try..... it is hard to say, there are things that don't seem to add up right in your post. Sorry for your confusion. |
Thanks. Provera is progesterone. And I did take it. It did not jumpstart my period. That is why I am going to take it again. I think I am ovulating because I have taken the ovulation tests and they have said that I am ovulating.

I highly doubt you are ovulating. You may have the hormones present that the test will pick up, but if you really are ovulating then you would be menstruating within 2 weeks or so of having ovulated.
I think you should read Taking Control of Your Fertility so that you can learn more about your cycle. |
14:26 Poster here again.
I have to agree with the PP - it is highly unlikely you are ovulating. I had non-ovulating cycles and though my period was quite light those cycles I still had one....I also had positive OPKs. OPKs are not the best way to determine ovulation. As PP stated, they only detect the hormone, not actual ovulation so you can in fact have an LH surge that the OPK picks up without ovulation. Charting/Temping is the only way for you to really be sure. As PP also stated - Taking Charge of Your Fertility sounds like a necessary read for you. Sorry about the oversight with Provera - wasn't thinking clearly. You aren't BFing, right? |
Here is my experience. Well, i do not have any chidren yet, but one is on the way. I did not have periods for like 3 years and none of the Obs were concerned, I started my own research after i failed 2-3 progesterone challenges. i figured my estrogen levels were low (i lost a few pounds and that made me stop ovulating, i was 120, lost 6 pounds and stopped periods), I was not ovulating, the only time when i would have periods was if I take estrogens for 14 days and then progesterone, thus mimiking cycle. Even on pills i did not have periods. I gained a few pounds and then tried estrogen-progesteron cycle, after which I had my first OWN period in 60 days. I started having periods but they were far spaced (50-80 days). I contnued weight gain and watching ovulation with kits. I also was already considering IUI cycle with stimulation when I got pregnant.
Maybe my story does not make sense in your case, but see if you lost oo much of your fat and that reduced estrogens and stopped ovulation.. Just a thought |
