Which schools for a very independent-minded kid?

Quick, what schools come to mind? DC will be entering kindergarten in 2009.

Our hope is to find an atmosphere that really nurtures the creative, even off-center type.

Burgundy Farm Country Day School has been great for our creative, independent daughter, who's been there for eight years. When presented with a list of proposed essay topics, she regularly asks to do something that is not on the list (but relevant to the subject being studied). Her requests are always met with delight, not annoyance.

Second 17:26's post! Burgundy is wonderful for independent kids. The environment in of itself breathes freedom and creativity. When I go there I almost feel creative myself: It's in the woods and there are bridges, ponds, even a barn. Very nice contrast to the urban atmosphere in which we life.

The low student:teacher ratio also allows for kids to pursue specific interests. As PP intimated, thinking outside the box or taking risks is embraced.

other progressive schools that embrace the independent-minded include green acres school (pre-k through 8) and GDS. both Green Acres and GDS have terrific energy. i can't stress enough the importance of visiting lots of schools and taking tours. you'll really get a sense of the style of the school so you can find the best fit for your child.

another progressive: lowell
traditional/progressive blend: maret and sheridan

good luck.

I've heard of several families who left GDS middle school suddenly over the summer because of dissatisfaction with the school. Does anyone know what this is all about?

"Several"? How many exactly?

One more vote for Burgundy Farm ... take a tour of the campus when school is in session and you will see first hand how the kids are actively encouraged to be engaged and creative learners. That is not to say it is unstructured ... there is definitely a schedule, classrooms, rigorous academics ... but all those essentials are seemingly in the background while cooperative learning is front and center.

I think Maret would be good too. Independent -minded kids may not want to do the hours of homework you get at Sidwell or GDS.

Another Burgundy vote, here. Our kids love it and there and they are DEFINITELY independent-minded. They are excited when they come home from school and it seems like they have a lot of choice during the day in what they do/how they do it.
