That confused me, as well. But, I think I was more focused on the fact that her younger child could not ride in the car to Oakton with her older child.
Wonder how her child gets to Carson?

I think that was in reference to the possibility that younger siblings may have to attend Western if their home ends up in boundary, even if they have an older sibling who opts out. Hence why these Crossfield moms are fighting it, several have a middle school and a late elementary schooler right now.

I think there are valid arguments to avoid Western, but traffic/crossing big roads is most certainly not one of them considering what you have to do to get from the Crossfield area to Oakton. If your teen isn't on 66 they are on back roads which might actually be worse.

Right but both Crossfield parents who spoke at the school board meeting mentioned traffic, and it's seriously a joke. I have a middle schooler at Carson. It takes me literally LESS time to get to Carson than it takes me to get to Crossfield. I don't understand how these people think anyone can take them seriously if they are complaining about traffic on the way to Carson/Western. Even the people in Folkstone or the horse neighborhood have just one more light than the rest of us, and West Ox/Lawyers is NOT a busy road.

Guess what, takes me 3 min to Crossfield but 15 to Carson without traffic. Seems like many people don't get how WIDE Crossfield's border is. If you're on the East side of west ox its a different experience than west side.

Really hate the backup on West Ox and Mclaren if you don't time the lights right. That Westox/7100 backup can sometimes take 3 light changes, though more often or not it's 2.

Yes but you are in the minority. The vast majority of Crossfield families live West of West Ox Rd/Lawyers Rd.

They were recorded but I don’t know if they are posted. They said they were going to send them out but they wanted to be able to gather all the questions asked in the chat and the answers they provided there.

I listened to both, it was pretty much the same info in both sessions.

I think this settles it then - Fox Mill will be in Boundary, Crossfield will remain at Oakton.

Honestly I am fine with it.

I'm not, one of the Crossfield families who wants my kids to go to Western. It is a pain in the butt to go to Oakton.

You can opt-in and ask to ride ne of the busses that are close to your house. I don't know if you are close to the Fox Mill area and can get one of the busses there.

Not sure how that settles anything. The Japanese immersion kids have to pupil place at Oakton if they want to continue Japanese now. They could just as easily pupil place at the closer Western HS. One random elective isn't enough to justify moving a whole school away from a high school that isn't even at 100% capacity.

No, that is not the case.

Fox Mill ES has Japanese Immersion. Carson continues JI for the Fox Mill kids. Then they got o SLHS, which has Japanese.

The SLHS kids that pupil place to Oakton use AP and Japanese to go there. Other kids who want AP will go to Herndon HS. Some will go to Langley for AP and Russian.

Adding Japanese to continue Japanese Imersion is a clear signal that the new HS is expecting JI to be moved there.

So the new school gives Fox Mill a place to pupil place for AP and Japanese without further overcrowding Oakton. If they were announcing removing Japanese from SLHS then maybe you'd have something. Otherwise, all I see is a continuation of the status quo.

The new school is likely going to be the home of JI because Fox Mill ES is slated to move in 3 of the 4 scenarios. They would not offer Japanese for JI kids to pupil place. If they are offering Japanese, it is more likely that Fox Mill is moving to the new school. There are not enough SLHS student placing at Oakton for Oakton to have Japanese, there has to be additional interest in the language. I think something like 25 total SLHS kids pupil place to Oakton each year.

SLHS has enough students to continue Japanese without the JI program. Kids from HHS pupil place for Japanese and there are kids from Hughes who start Japanese in MS. DS JI language class at Carson has 30 kids in it, it is not a huge group. There are other kids taking Japanese at SLHS. They would probably wait to see how many kids choose Japanese at the school before deciding if they are keeping it or getting rid of it. I would guess they will keep it.

It was included in the morning and evening Zoom meetings with the planning team yesterday.

So, what did they say would be there other than Japanese? Is that for sure? Or is it still being worked out?

French and Spanish are considered the standard foreign languages, and they are offered at every HS.

The suggestion was that Western would also offer Korean and Japanese.

Not offering Chinese (offered at Oakton) and German (offered at South Lakes and Westfield) could make Western less attractive to some families.

They said Spanish, French, Japanes, and Korean. People were asking about German but they had not decided on the fifth language.

It’s amazing how quickly the Western HS went from being coveted to something that generates so many questions and that so many, especially those now at Oakton, want to avoid. Not a great roll-out, to put it mildly.

They spent too much time dreaming about special programs. Too much frosting and not enough cake.
First thing should have been the boundary and courses offered. But, they are beginning with the name.

I think most in the area are excited about having a school. I also think a lot of Crossfield people would like to go there, but you have people like the speakers the other night that make it about their own opinions. Using the pandemic as an excuse and construction at Crossfield as a reason to stay at Oakton? When the distance to Oakton is at least twice as long and very, very difficult. 66 or windy roads.
