Child care ideas for special-needs child in 1/2 day preschool?

Anonymous
Hi,

My daughter will start a FCPS Child Find preschool class this September. She will attend in the mornings, 5 days a week, and we are very excited about it. My husband and I both need to work full-time, so she is currently in a full-day structured daycare program for "typical" children. Although she loves her daycare teachers, we fear that it may not be the best place for her in the fall since she will miss half of each day, not to mention the fact that we will need to pay the full-time tuition to reserve her slot. What do other working parents with a young child in a special needs preschool do for child care the rest of the day? Half-day nannies seem expensive and difficult to come by.

Any ideas are appreciated!

This is not unique to children w special needs. Many preschools are 1/2 day programs.

It is my understanding that parents get a nanny / nanny share with another classmate.
Some find a SAHM in the neighborhood.

Since it is a Fairfax County Public School program, I assume it is free. Although you will not be using the morning slot, you may want to continue with the daycare that you are in and just be thankful that you have good care and eat the full cost - or see if your daycare program will be willing to work with you to create a share spot and try and find another child for the morning when your daughter is not there.
