Haynes - Test Rap is Fly

Too bad their teachers were passing around old copies of the DC CAS. Haynes didn't make AYP as a result.

No teachers passed around any copies of any test. The teachers in one fifth grade classroom used as sample questions problems that had been included in DC-CAS materials years ago but had never actually been included in a test . . . until last year. Some kids reported to the teachers, and the teachers then self-reported and resigned. The teachers were fabulous and beloved -- it was an incredibly sad episode for the school.

The teacher was using an old copy of the DCCAS. Since DC reuses questions each year it has ALWAYS been verboten to make copies of the test.

The fact that these teachers had old tests in their possession is very troublesome. Are there more copies of these test floating around Haynes? How many years were the using these test questions to "review."

It's relatively easy to find out if a school has been erasing to the top. All you have to do is pay the testing company to run an erasure analysis.

This sort of cheating is much harder to detect.

Haynes has solid test scores, but were they built on having copies of the DC CAS around in order to better prep the students?

DC needs an entirely new bank of questions each year. This sort of cheating happens far too often and everyone wants to pretend it doesn't happen.

No relation to Haynes, but what is your agenda???

I'm not familiar with this incident, but it seems like a gray area to me. The increasing importance that has been placed on these silly tests necessitates test prep, which goes beyond the material covered but also the basics of test taking. How was this prep different from the many sample SAT tests I took and retook in my SAT prep classes in high school? Are there approved prep materials available to teachers? If not, don't all teachers rely on past experience when prepping students? I find it hard to believe that DC CAS would be so lazy as to recycle tests verbatim. Is that really what happened? Lots of questions here.

Never underestimate how lazy DCPS can be. The DC CAS recycles questions. Don't believe me? As OSSE.

The only approved and released test questions are on the OSSE website.

These teachers had old copies of what are supposed to be secure tests. It's cheating.

That video is great.

Jeez, way to vilify a couple of teachers who made a mistake and took responsibility for it.

If a teacher had an old copy of the DC-CAS that's a huge violation of test security. All test booklets are supposed to be sealed and sent back to the test company.

sad stupid video about test prep

Wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to worry about teachers "teaching to the test" at all?! If children were actually assessed on the content of their curriculum, instruction and delivery of that curriculum were monitored, and best practices were commonly used, this wouldn't be an issue! The DC CAS is inherently flawed and biased, just like every other test out there. And now that DC has adapted the Common Core Standards, everything will change - AGAIN!

As a parent I am pro data. I like a modicum of standardized tests.

The entire test security at Haynes should be in question if this happened.

ITA. Very cute. Lots of schools do similar things. Although I'd prefer less casual language and less emphasis on advanced. NCLB as written gives no bonus points for % advanced. I've seen kids who are already highly proficient get pushed by parents who have been told by schools that DC CAS is like the SAT. It's not like DC CAs results will get you a scholarship.

Passing around old tests is not an issue for me so long as the content tested is relevant and well taught.
