Many of them already hate him because Dawkins is a biology realist. The irony of many online atheist communities now is that they have adopted a new religion themselves but don’t recognize that.

DP with a sincere question. What is biology realism? It sounds like eugenics when you put it like that, but probably I'm wrong.

He believes sex is a binary. See below:

Now I see why “Christians” like this bigot.

Huh? Christians don't like him, not sure where you got that.

They post about him frequently and are eating up his every word.

"Frequently" =/= like. You should know that.

More like watching a train wreck

^^^Atheists who once idolized Dawkins as one of the Four Horseman of New Atheism have turned on him. He’s no longer a scientist, they say.

I have no affiliation with any movement and really DGAF what some old random white dudes say. I never even heard of them before some believers on DCUM posted about them let alone "idolize" any of them.

I simply don't believe in supernatural forces/fables. Nothing more complicated than that.

Weird that they cling to his every word for people who "don't like" him. In fact, I wonder if they've ever denounced him...

Ya wanna know what else Richard Dawkins says, and says it often?

That there is insufficient evidence that a god exists.

He says it a lot. He's written books about it.

If we are going to address something Richard Dawkins says, shouldn't it be that?

I'm guessing OP linked to this because it was the most recent, and somewhat surprising, thing he said. There have been other DCUM threads on Dawkins in the past, going back to 2011 if you do a website search.

But fine, start a thread on him. Oh wait, you did.

I see you’ve adopted your own religious beliefs not based on science.

No supernatural forces required to acknowledge gender fluidity.

Believing that you can transmute your born sex is as religious a belief as the transubstantiation of Christ. Dawkins is an experienced evolutionary biologist who had already offended many fervently religious and terminally online atheists by speaking openly about the material reality of human sexual dimorphism. Since they were already annoyed at Dawkins for speaking biological facts that clashed with their evangelical religious gender fanaticism, this comment about Christianity was just additional fuel for the fire.

I don’t get the sense Dawkins cares much about their opinions on any subject, though that probably makes them furious.

Stop derailing this thread with gender nonsense.

Agreed.

This thread is about an atheist who made comments which were surprising because he expressed a preference for one set of supernatural fables over others.

Nothing more.

Stop cluttering up this thread with your own personal supernatural beliefs. This is religious forum, you are free to start your own thread about your own modern metaphysical fables.

What really happened is Dawkins took a look around the UK and discovered that their post-Christian society was not becoming inhabited by enlightened new atheists, but instead devout Muslims.

And all of the sudden Christianity didn’t look quite so bad after all.

Lol, you summed it up well. At heart, he's an old white guy.

And like Richard Dawkins, I'm a cultural Christian, having grown up Catholic and still celebrate Christmas and Easter. Not the religious aspect of it, but the together-with-family aspect. And the commercial secular version as well, with Santa and the Easter Bunny having visited my kids.

It's a bit similar to secular Jews who don't practice the religious aspects of Judaism, but have a Jewish identity.

And yeah, if I had to choose to actively practice a religion, I'd choose Christianity over Islam any day. I'd choose Judaism, Hinduism, Druidism, just about anything over Islam.

I have no issue with this except I wish he had not brought Islam into it. I think there's a good argument for cultural Christianity based on history alone.

NP. Why? I’m an atheist who would never willingly choose to live in an Islamic-majority country because I am a woman. I’m not going to believe in God any time soon. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the many positive aspects of Christianity that exist.

PP here - I think it undermines his original point, which is that the society he has grown up in/lives in has a long Christian history that has spilled over into secular life and that there is a culture around those traditions that can and should be recognized as his country's heritage whether there is a state religion or not.

Liking something and admitting you benefit from something but disregarding the source seems like you want the fruits but not the labor. We see a lot of the same thought in our culture and society now, about many different aspects of life. All the good with none of the work or commitment. So it goes.

Do you happen to be a Catholic mother and/or grandmother, because this is the most Catholic matriarch statement that may have even been written.
