U.S. makes deal with Iran to swap prisoners and release $6 billion in frozen money
Politics Sep 11, 2023 4:33 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has cleared the way for the release of five American citizens detained in Iran by issuing a blanket waiver for international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of U.S. sanctions. In addition, as part of the deal, the administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the sanctions waivers late last week, a month after U.S. and Iranian officials said an agreement in principle was in place. Congress was not informed of the waiver decision until Monday, according to the notification, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The outlines of the deal had been previously announced and the waiver was expected. But the notification marked the first time the administration said it was releasing five Iranian prisoners as part of the deal. The prisoners have not been named.

It appears that Iran got its own money back and both countries got their citizens back in a prisoner exchange or if you prefer the terminology, hostage exchange. When you put your money in the bank, do you not expect to retrieve it without someone holding your funds for ransome.

Not if you are the world's number one sponsor of state terrorism.

Most recently, the Iranians have been backing Houthi's to rain down missiles all over the Middle East. They also mined the Strait of Hormuz in the past.

Look, I don't like Iran's politics, but that country is far from the world's number one terrorist sponsor. What is your definition of a terrorist, and I am sure somebody can show you the terrorist support of a nation you most likely support.

It's not up to Iran to say when this is over. It attacked Israel directly.

Are you forgetting that Israel attacked Iran directly? They killed high ranking Iranian generals. That’s a big deal.

Hamas is backed by Iran. They kidnapped, murdered, tortured and raped Israelis. Israel does not start wars, but they know how to defend themselves and be victorious. Plenty of Iranians are showing their support for Israel. Radical terrorism is bad. May peace and democracy prevail!

Well that is a load of bullsh#t. Israel is clearly the aggressor and has been for the past few decades. Israel was behind the terrorist attacked in Iran, assassinated Iranian scientist, politicians, military leaders, etc and now has taken an action that is a declaration of war. Israel is an anti democratic apartheid state.

This is a great time to cut the lead ball that is Israel free of our leg. Why are we defending a terrorist state that takes territory by force, uses starvation as a weapon of war and does not allow free press?

Funny, I blame all of this on Jimmy Carter and Reagan.

Really? I blame it squarely on Joseph Robinette Biden.

But hey, at least we don’t have to read mean tweets.

Ransom.

It's more effective if you tell them, you aren't getting your money back. Ever. You have 24 hours to return them in good health or your port of Bandar Abbas and your nuclear sites will be smoked by TLAMs. Four hours after that, the port of Chabahar.

Four hours after that, the port of Imam Khameini. Then we go medieval on your internal military bases and electrical grid. Then you decapitate their leadership and walk away. You will fear the U.S. and never F with us again.

That's what was said before we tried that with Afghanistan. How did that work out for those who had loved ones who died in Afghanistan or came home effed up physically and/or psychologically. I mean we did go medieval and all. And how did that work out for the trillions of dollars spent going medieval and limping away while American roads, bridges and schools sink further and further in decay. Afghanistan does not and did not fear the US and I'm not sure Iran does either. I mean I actually think Iran secretly like the US for taking out Iran's number one adversary, Iraq.

Iran was broke under Trump. What’s happening now is unprecedented in world history. Biden funded this.
