desparation in dcps middle schoolers

Anonymous
Today's WaPo: 10% of 8th graders have thought of committing suicide. 28% have had sex. 14% drinking alcohol. 2 in 5 9th graders repeat the grade. I think these numbers seem too low. Children growing up too fast with limited support.

this is awful. i wish we had more anti-poverty programs in place in the US.

And I wish people knew how to spell desperation.

13:34, you got the jest of the message, so let it go.
Anonymous
Surely, you jest!

Add:

75% of DCPS ms grads can't spell

Also, isn't the Washpo geared for people who have at least an 8th grade education.

maybe that explains the misspelling in the title of this thread

No, a typo. Hope your snowflakes don't wind up being one of these stats. Probably just a desperate sex partner.

I'm jest still trying to figure that one out!

Maybe clear writing isn't being taught in DC middle schools anymore either?

I wish we did, too, but I don't think all suicidal middle-schoolers are low income.

It's a pretty scary number, though. What does Ms. Henderson say about it?

Henderson says more intense reading training is needed for middle school teachers. Seriously. See turque's article about it

Uh, not true. Maybe you guys should just go to the source rather than relying on Turque to interpret for you. Watch the presentation on the channel 13. It is really informative and names a whole list of ways dcps is attempting to deal with Middle School issues. Will they work? Dunno. But they definitely have ideas beyond "reading training". Turque is trying to get you rile up with that juxtaposition of news and quote and people who want to run with it, do. Silliness.
