Help - need new OB recommendation

Anonymous
I had my first child 2 weeks ago and could not be more disappointed with the way my OB practice treated me during the delivery. I need to see someone for follow-up visits post-cesarean and for the six-week checkup, and I'm also planning on getting pregnant again within a year. So, I need a good OB - someone who will actually bother to stop in and check on me when I'm in labor. I'd like someone located at the Virginia Hospital Center if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

I'd recommend Kristina Hibshman (at Physicians for Women in Alexandria). I could never say enough good things about her. She's attentive, reassuring, and very knowledgeable. She delivered my baby when she worked for a different practice in DC and I was so sad to have to find another doctor after she left the city.

Search for "Arlington Women's Center" on this site and you'll get some great recommendations for Dr. Rossi, Crowther, etc. I love them and they are located at VHC.

Drs. Patricia Bannon--wonderful and her partner Dr. Armstrong--also wonderful. Dr. Bannon delivered my first ( couldn't have been kinder) and will deliver my second. I also saw Dr. Armstrong for a few appointments and he also stopped in to see me after I delivered. They also have a new partner Dr. Lawson who also seems to be very knowledable.

OP - Do you mind saying who the OB was that you are unhappy with?

When you have a second will you be trying for a VBAC? If so, then I recommend Dr. Tchabo. However, be prepared for long waits in his office.

If you're looking for caring and attentive follow-up, do NOT go to Reiter and Hill! They have an office in Falls Church.

I would second the recommendation for Dr. Hibshman. I saw her when she was practicing in DC and thought she was really fantastic. She took lots of time during the appointments for me to ask questions - I never felt rushed. Unfortunately, she left the practice b/f I actually delivered, so I can't speak to what she's like during delivery, but I really thought she was wonderful. For what its worth, I have also read MANY great things about Dr. Tchabo and I plan to go to him when I get pregnant next - I want a small or solo practitioner vs. a larger practice (where Hibshman currently is).

Another plug for Dr. Patricia Bannon. I haven't delivered yet, but she has been so great so far and I am a HUGE baby about going to the doctor's office-- I hate being poked and prodded. She has been excellent about making me feel calm and less nervous about my impending delivery. She delivers at VHC.

I heartily endorse 10:43's post. I, too, saw Dr. Hibshman while she was in DC. I don't know anything about the other doctors in Hibshman's new practice, and when you go to a group practice, I think it's important to be comfortable with each of them and their manner.

When Hibshman left her DC practice, I switched to Dr. Tchabo who is quite wonderful, knowledgeable, caring. However, Tchabo will likely NOT be stopping during your labor. One of his residents will. The resident actually delivered my baby with guidance from Tchabo.

I really like Jane Piness. I only saw her for gyn (not ob) because I wanted to deliver at georgetown, but she is at VHC and was great.

I second the question of which doctor the OP was referring to....it's very helpful for those of us out here to know when someone has a terrible experience.

Don't mean to hijack the post, but I'm the 10:43 poster and actually want to switch to Dr. Tchabo for my next pregnancy so I'm very curious about 15:54's post. Is it possible to refuse having a resident deliver your babe? I would much prefer to have Dr. Tchabo..... when you register at the hospital can't you decline care from students/residents? Any other information you can give about your experience with Dr. Tchabo, VHC, etc. would be very much appreciated! TIA

I'm a current patient with Dr. Tchabo. From what I've learned, he is at the deliveries (usually) but guiding the residents through the delivery. Its a teaching hospital so the residents have to learn. I'm confident Dr. Tcahbo would take over the delivery if something was not happening correctly.

If you choose a teaching hospital you technically can't decline care from a resident based on the fact that he/she is a resident alone. The hospital has a dual responsibility to education and patient care, as does the attending. In your case, discuss your concerns with the doctor himself and he will likely set your mind at ease.
