I've heard of the Renaissance Weekend before, but don't know what it is. What's the point? Who organizes it? Who attends?
Curious - thanks. |
| I'm curious too. Got an invitation a month or so ago. Is this their marketing strategy? |
| PP - can I ask what field you're in? I thought it was about policy/politics - maybe you can validate my assumption? |
| Used to be a super exclusive, high level, invitiation only gathering of so-called intelluctuals ( and wanna be intellectuals who could get themselves invites), for the purpose of high level networking and gathering to solve the worlds problems. Held in Hilton Head over New Years weekend. Now they have them all over the country, I think, and probably more often. Not sure how exclusive it is any more.. but I bet it's still expensive...? |
| My invitation said registration was free, but they're in pricey places. Very curious how I got invited. Was sort of wondering if they were vastly expanding the list, but I have just made a significant job change. Mostly woud like to know how they got my name and whether it's still even an interesting event. |
| tbh, I was thinking of the Renaissance Fair when I read this one. |
| We haven't been in years. We were invited to go probably 10 or more years ago, so we did. It was interesting, and I would like to go again, but it is not the sort of vacation I see doing with kids, even though they try to make them more kid friendly. To enjoy them, you have to be really open and curious and also willing to present yourself on topics on which you know something about. You attend workshops/talks all day with some break times built in. These days, I don't have energy for anything other than wrangling kids and collapsing in a heap if we're on vacation. They are pricey - usually about $5K a weekend if I remember correctly. I stopped looking at the prices a few years back when I gave up any illusion that we would ever return within the next 10-15 years. The main event is still the Hilton Head one, but we went to a different one. |

We went about 9 years ago and it was interesting - we did Charleston for New Year's Eve.
They have things around the country at certain times of the year, Jackson Hole WY was one, Charleston and Hilton Head are standard. The New Year's gathering was great and we met a lot of interesting people. It was as network focused as you chose to make it, but it is a great opportunity to meet people so networking is really part of the point. Lots of good discussions and panels. Interesting that people are receiving invites now without having been referred by someone who's already on their list. Personally if you are able to afford it and you get invited it's an interesting experience but not one I'd do regularly. |
| I'm one of the PPs who received an invite, and it indicated that the costs were waived or something like that. I have no plans to go. A weekend of networking sounds like hell, to be honest. |
22:30 here, and I don't know that this is the case. I'd love to know whether someone referred me, though, and if so, who it was! Maybe I'll call them and ask.
