Yeast infection at time of delivery - problem?

Anonymous
I have been suffering from more yeast infections than I've ever had this pregnancy, and my OB has treated them with fluconazole (the pill). I'm now about 1 - 2 weeks away from delivery and have yet another infection. I'm paranoid that I might have something the day of -- would this post a risk to the newborn?

Check thrush protocols and follow them. All natural stuff and clears it in 3 days. Also watch your diet.

Have you tried something other than the medication you were prescribed (which is the generic for Diflucan -- which my doctors actually told me to stay away from during pregnancy, and I get frequent yeast infections) to try to get rid of it? I was given a cream that is similar in use to OTC yeast infection treatments but much more effective and without the terrible (itchy, burning) side effects that I've gotten from the 2 times I used OTC treatments. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it.

Also load up on probiotics!

Try cutting sugar and dairy other than yogurt from your diet. Eat lots of yogurt, also raw garlic. I don't recommend eating both of those things together.

Get Plain Kefir and drink a few shots a day. That stuff tastes nasty but works. You also need to cut sugar out. Probiotics is also a good idea...you can get the capsules.

It's incredibly annoying (I've had chronic yeast infections since around 16 weeks that are moderately better, but not gone with treatment + yogurt + probiotics + baths + anything else I could think of, so I assume I'll be in your shoes too in a few weeks!) But it's not dangerous to your child. Worst case scenario is that the baby is exposed to the yeast during delivery and develops thrush, which they then treat. But plenty of babies whose mothers didn't have yeast infections get thrush too---it's a fairly run-of-the-mill infant problem, and the treatment is not especially toxic or problematic. So don't worry too much! I do find that epsom salt baths work for fending the yeast off in the short term, though (supposedly baking soda baths are good too?)---and since our birth class also recommends baths for early labor, maybe you could try that once you do go into labor to try to minimize how much yeast is actually hanging around at delivery?

I had a yeast infection at the time of delivery and the midwife told me it would be fine but the baby would probably have thrush. That's exactly what happened and it was hard to get rid of but nothing major. I do recommend doing a candida diet and probiotics along with the medicine after the birth and when breast feeding is complete (if you BF) but I wouldn't do it now. It's a very intense diet and you will lose a lot of weight and have some symptoms of "die off" because the candida releases toxins as it dies. I did it and it was very difficult but the results were wonderful. After the "die off" period ended I lost 20 lbs and felt better than I ever have in my life. It was like a dark cloud was lifted.

I had a yeast infection before delivery - I tried to use garlic first (internally) but that didn't work, so my midwife said to just use an OTC suppository cream and that worked. She also told me that if I had a yeast infection during labor it could make a woman more prone to labial tearing - not a HUGE issue, but something you would probably like to avoid
My son didn't develop thrush, btw.

I thought I might have a yeast infection in the final weeks and midwife said no point to come in; she suggested drinking lots of water and staying away from sugar. No problems that I'm aware of.

OP here - thanks so much for the recommendations. I was told by my OB today that Diflucan sometimes doesn't work for some of her patients, so she prescribed at 3 -day course of Terconazole.
I did have a question for those who've used probiotics or digestive enzymes, etc. -- did you have any particular brand that you liked? Any other natural stuff I should try while I'm at it? I already do a TON of yogurt...
Thanks!

12:36 here -- Terconazole is what my doctor prescribed after saying that they don't recommend Diflucan during pregnancy. I have to say, as icky as the Terconazole is, it was really effective for me (and I get frequent yeast infections, and have had a few during pregnancy). It always seems to clear up the problem for me after one day.

Clotrimazole and miconazole are also okay for use during pregancy---Category B and C, respectively. As a tip on clotrimazole, you can often buy it as jock itch cream in the same formulation for a lot less than the same size tube marketed as yeast infection medication. Yay for gender disparities... (Just check to be sure the percent is the same---1% formulation is the same as the 7-day treatment and 2% is the same as the 3-day treatment.) You obviously need to have an applicator if you're going to treat internally so I keep the reusable ones that come with some brands of cream. (Others are intended to be disposable, and I'm not sure it's a great idea to reuse those...though they may be exactly the same!)
