Any practical breakfast ideas for a young, working family on the go? Both parents work and both kids still in diapers and need help dressing (AND need to leave the house for daycare), so it has to be quick and EASY (oh, and healthy too if at all possible - no Lucky Charms, please. ![]() What works for you? Thanks in advance! |
Homemade waffles - I make a tripple batch and freeze them. I stick them in the toaster oven in the morning (just like you would if you purchased them already frozen).
It also works for pancakes. |
Ooo, that's a good one. We don't have a freezer though....still, I'll keep that in mind for when we do. Thanks. |
We do pancakes and waffles too - but Eggo ones - no time for homemade at our house! Eggo makes small pancakes that we bring in the car. It wasn't until my DD was about 3 that she learned that butter and syrup were an option to have on pancakes so I recommend you not telling your kids if you want to avoid that. |
I do something similar with pancakes, but don't freeze. I make whole grain, flax seed pancakes with mashed bananas on a Sunday, then have them for most of the week as an option in the fridge. I add the bananas to add a little sweetness so that we don't use syrup. Hodgson Mills makes an easy pancake mix. We also do eggs about 1/2 the time, but that takes a little more time. |
Myhusband makes smoothies with silken tofu, frozen fruit, and yogurt. The kids love them. And they're healthy! |
TLC kashi granola bar and some fruit. |
we either do raisin bran or cheerios, waffles, english muffins, or bagels as our "carb" and maybe some cut up apple, plum or grapes as our "fruit". One person does dressing of children/childcare while one person makes breakfast for everyone, usually. Sometimes its tricky if the newborn has to nurse then too!!! Hang in there, it can't be tougher than this, right? My oldest one peed on the floor this morning. ![]() |
Muffins

We alternate frozen mini pancakes, waffles, and french toast. No butter or syrup. Sometimes we will change things up with a muffin or bagel. And then they always get fresh cut-up fruit (banana, melon, mango, berries, grapes, etc.) to go along with the carbs. Plus milk.
I just bought this cool stuff from Whole Foods the other day. It's basically organic pancake batter in a pressurized container (like Redi-Whip whipped cream). You just shake and dispense right into your hot pan. Can also be used to make waffles. We haven't used it yet though, and it's pretty pricey (~$6.00), but I thought it would be fun for a change. |
I make somthing called Morning Glory Muffins and freeze them. They are loaded with good things.. apples, apple sauce, pineaple, raisens, nuts (optional) coconut (optional) and lots of carrots. There are a lot of ingredients and I hate shredding the carrots, but sometimes I buy the preshredded bags. You can do a search on any recipe site for them and should get something similar. I make them 1-2 times a month and pull them out when we can not do organic oatmeal at the table. |
This makes me realize how lucky I am that our day care feeds the kids breakfast! But on my days off, we do sometimes have to leave the house early and breakfast has to be quick. Eggs are a good option for us; I keep some hard boiled and other days, I nuke Egg Beaters with some cheese. Blueberries also travel pretty well in a snack trap--as long as your kids don't think they are more fun to squish than to eat! |
I made scrambled eggs in the microwave this morning. Who knew!?! We'll be doing THAT again for sure. |
Eggs in the microwave...seriously? How do you do this - how long? |
