This is probably obvious to those of you with babies, but as a new mom I have no clue on the answer!
We've been lucky to get lots of hand-me-downs from friends, and are drowning in short-sleeved onesies. However, we're having a fall baby so we'll need some long-sleeved clothes too (in addition to sweaters, jackets, etc.) What we *do* have are lots of the little long-sleeved snap shirts. Is it feasible to put a long-sleeved snap shirt over a short-sleeved onesie since we already have these things as opposed to adding long-sleeved onesies to the mix, or is this the kind of thing that won't actually work in real life because both are designed to fit fairly snugly? (We have a range of sizes on the shirts so in theory we could go up a size to put on top of a properly-fitting onesie...just not sure if this is really feasible or not!) Trying to figure out what to put on our registry, and I don't want to add too much clothing that we won't actually use. Thanks...and sorry for such a stupid newbie question!! |
The little long-sleeved snap shirts (if they are the ones I'm thinking of) are good undershirts when the baby is small and you are waiting for the umbilical stump to fall off. After that, we used the short sleeved onesies underneath warmer outer layers (like the footie sleepers). |
I agree that it won't be a question of fit so much as the fact that even long sleeved undershirts just aren't that warm. The nice thing is that you can probably get away with short sleeved onesies for just around the house, unless you really keep the heat turned down. So you just need layers (like footie jammies or playsuits) for when you're out and about. |
i had a fall baby also and she ended up wearing footie pajamas pretty much all the time. with a tiny baby, putting on multiple clothing items can sometimes get tedious (especially since you have to take them off so often to change diapers). i don't think it would have been practical for me to put a long sleeve snap shirt over a short sleeved onesie -- i feel like it would have bunched up or just been too many clothes to put on. but i agree with PP that you can just use short sleeved onesies at home and cover it with a sleepsack that has sleeves.. or if you go out you can just put a sweater or sweatshirt on over the short sleeve onesie. those long sleeve snap shirts are nice for the beginning before the stump falls off, but after that i didn't find them that useful. if you're registering for additional items, i'd say maybe register for a couple of long sleeved onesies, a couple of sweaters/sweatshirts to put over your short sleeve onesies, and plenty of footie pajamas which i think are really great and easy for a fall/winter baby. good luck! |
I don't think it's a dumb question at all, and have actually been wondering the same thing about long-sleeved onesies! Right now, I too only have the ones with the side-snap and mitts, which we'll only use in the first few weeks. And then we have tons of short-sleeved onesies, as that is what everyone has give us so far, and I bought a few sets from Carters myself. Sounds like I don't actually need a whole ton of long-sleeved onesies, so maybe I'll just buy one set? |
Short sleeved onesies are the greatest invention ever. #1 was a winter baby and we put them on her under long sleeved footed sleepers or even just warm swaddle blankets. |
I'd buy some little sweatshirts and sweaters. There are some really cute ones. I bought a lot of little hoodies for my daughter to go over the short-sleeved onesies. Buy them a size or two too big and roll up the sleeves to get more wear out of them. I also bought a bunch of the carter's pull-on knit pants to match the onesies. Those were the best pants I found, and they came in 2-packs that were pretty cheap. |
i don't think half sleeve onsies are an issue for fall babies, that is ifyou plan on putting sleepers overtop of top that have full sleeves. I bet you'll be swaddling the newborn for quite some time anyway. I do think as it get really cold you'll probably find you'll want a few long sleeved onsie's to add to the mix. |
respectfully disagree with the PP who suggested sweaters. We had a winter baby and for the first couple months DS only wore footies, and we opften put the short sleeve onesies underneath--but you can do long sleeve onesies too, if its cold out. I would wait to buy things like sweaters, sweatshirts, as they are a pain to put on and off (and you will be changing diapers all the time at first). You can use the long sleeve onesies too, when its warnmer, sometimes we get glorious warm fall days. Or get a pair or two of little cotton pants.
For us, short sleeve onesies plus zip footie pajamas in both cotton and fleece, plus the 'swaddle me" swaddle were essentials. |
We used short-sleeve onesies under long-sleeve footies for MONTHS. You'll want DC is more than just a onesie (it's like underwear for every season except summer), and it's a PAIN to put long sleeve clothing over long-sleeve underwear, imo. |
OP here---thanks all! Yes, they are the little snap shirts that are recommended for before the umbilical stump falls off---I'm realizing we probably have far more of them than we need, though, if they lose their usefulness after that, since I think we have a half dozen short-sleeved ones and a dozen long-sleeved ones! Ah, well. We're happily pretty well-equipped on the footed sleeper front too, so it sounds like maybe I should just focus on getting some sweaters and call it a day... Thanks for the help! |
I put long sleeved snap shirts over short sleeved onsies on my fall baby when it was cool in the house. Unlike most people, I didn't really like footie pajamas. I much preferred onsies with pants/footie pants and another shirt layer on top if needed. Because DC spat up a lot, I was changing his shirts way more often than his pants. Plus, I thought diaper changing with pants and onsie was easier than with one piece pajamas - and exposed less skin (assuming your footie pjs zipped up). |
