I'm new at gardening and am really learning as I go. I've had a good harvest from my tomato plants (3 hybrids, 1 cherry) despite the heat and low rainfall amounts in July. I have one green tomato left on the three main plants. We had two large crops that came all at once, so I ended up freezing most of it for sauce. Is this it or will I have a secondary harvest, even though I don't see anything new growing on the vine?
I trimmed back any brown leaves and suckers last night. I'm hoping that with this week's rain and lower temps something will start up again. Any advice? |
| depends what exact breed you bought. some are 'determinate' which means they produce all at once, and some are 'indeterminate' which means they continue more slowly all along. sounds like you may have had determinate ones - common with plum tomatoes precisely because they are best for sauce so you need them all at once. |
| If you're not sure whether they are determinant or not, are there any flowers on the plants that don't have any fruit on them? If there aren't flowers, I would guess that you have determinant tomatoes that are done for the year. |
Thanks PP. They must be determinates; I don't see any flowers on the plant. I'll pay more attention next spring.
My pepper plants did start producing again, so that's something. Are there any good gardening blogs? I visit a few sites, but I have yet to find a site that I love. |

Have you been feeding them? If you haven't, you might want to start and see if that gets them going again. If you have been, just keep at it. I typically have a lull after a big first harvest. Often what happens is they start flowering again and tomatos appear but take a long time to ripen and start getting hit by colder temps.
