This is so short-sighted. A top player on a national championship winning team or similar top team who so happens to be in a higher grade but in the correct age group will get recruited. Why not have that player play up? Maybe that next year team is just as good. Besides, that player will play/practice with both older and younger kids throughout their club and HS experience (if they so choose). Their club team is just one aspect of their resume. |
| Doesn't the just reward the loser red shirting families? |
If I was a college coach I wouldn't consider Aug Sept players playing down a grade. Theres probabaly 100s of players playing their grade to pick fron. |
The problem solves itself when players playing down a grade dont get recruited. |

Ok back to the actual topic of this thread. How will the change be facilitated by clubs?
I wonder if the clubs consider certain levels on one age about as good as a certain level of another. For example, from what I’ve seen at our club with A - F teams, the year older B team is pretty on par with the year younger A team and on down the line. Sometimes there is even a higher level younger team in the same division as an older team, and those can be 2 levels apart. If your child is moving down a year, seems likely, they will move up at 1-2 team levels. |
We'll see -- at least for Arlington. |
This is why this year will be so crazy. Some AugDec won't want to move from their current team because the team they are on is better than the team below -- and some will because the opposite is true. |
So. Are the 20+ year old internationals Trojan horses starting as freshman? Asking for a friend. |
| Evaluate whether your kid is good enough. If yes, they won’t have problems. If no, stop worrying. Jeez. These threads are mad. Not saying mine is going to make it, but it is case by case, and if you aren’t capable/willing to make the determination, then start doing some self reflection. All else is nonsense. |
They are not going to force top team players who are on grade with the rest of the team to play down a grade just because they were born Aug - Dec. Some prefer to go down because their kids are a grade behind and the younger team is better. Some will continue to play on grade. The question remains only to those who are not on grade and don’t want to go down if the club would listen to the parents or not. |
| Just for the record, you have time to self-correct. If you are obsessed with this, it is 100% chance your child is. It is a 100% chance a college coach will take my kid and us as a supporting family who don’t give a 💩 about things we can’t control and are simply proactively working on our game which we can control. Don’t say someone did not tell you. |
By “top” you mean “favorite “ in hindsight 😉😉 |
How does this affect my player if they’re born in August–December? A: These players are most likely to shift age groups. |
For a girl you can play on age up until junior year then when everybody is past puberty you could bounce up a year if you want but playing up isn't necessary. If the girl played up at a young age they wouldn't be as good, would be less likely to play technical positions, are likely to be on the bench, and get bad coaching. Boys should play on age and only play up if they are amazing. ECNL agrees and said in podcast play on age unless you are amazing. |
True for the other level but not on ECNL teams that kids are on grade. |
