Maret Athletic Fields

"friends of the field" - you lost. Move on. Certainly there's something better you can be doing with your time than getting yourself all worked up over something that's already done. Go enjoy your life, participate in your family, find a hobby. Leave the kids alone.

I have never been more ashamed of my neighbors than this weekend. The entitlement of not just vandalizing something because they didn’t get their way, but then actually defending the vandalism is truly outrageous.

Where was this supposed eco outrage when SJC installed 3 turf fields a few years ago? This has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with wanting a free park and/or misplaced anger at other things beyond their control.

Those of us who know these neighbors shake our heads at the hypocrisy of those we know who are highly vocal about the issue. Many of them live no where near the field (one lives on the other side of the country), have kids who play sports on turf elsewhere and send their kids to private schools too.

The latest discussion revolves around suing Maret in civil court because turf is poison. Meanwhile, DC is installing turf field after turf field in projects around the city, because until someone can make grass that can handle 5+ hours of use every day, that’s what cities have to work with.

To be clear:

1. No official communication from Maret accused anyone specifically of anything. The email informed the community of the vandalism.

2. Maret followed every process, jumped through every hoop and patiently proceeded with the permitting process as dictated by the law. They now have the right to utilize the field. This issue is settled, regardless of the frustration of those on the other side.

3. The disingenuous opposition - first it was the trees, then it was the turf - is superficial and self-serving.

The fields look great and Maret did just as it was supposed to do.

To be clear:

1. I have never seen vandalized scoreboards in other private schools in the area which raises red flags on maret security protocols.

2. Maret build the field with the community opposing it, so it is obvious that this will continue in the foreseeable future.

3. Maret is not taking any security measures to prevent future incidents like this one.

Who were the vandals? Have they been identified?

This argument requires belief that unhinged neighbors exist everywhere and are held in check from destroying private property and making life difficult for teenage athletes only by robust security. I think it’s more likely that most people are law-abiding and wouldn’t try to vandalize a school because they didn’t like some ground cover. The people around Maret are just very special.

Maybe the most absurd post in the entire thread. That vandals struck a scoreboard. Maybe we can mobilize the National Guard or ICE? Seems like they’re already in the area, so might be an appropriate reaction.

The “community opposition” are a bunch of entitled neighbors who wanted to maintain a completely unused field on their block. That’s not “community opposition,” it’s definitional NIMBYism.

And finally, the incident happened on Friday night or Saturday morning. What do you think an appropriate response would have been inside of 36 hours?

I’m sure the neighbors would adore it if heavily armed paramilitary troopers with Maret hoodies showed up.

You seem to know who did this. Have you contacted the police or the school with your information?

Based on your writing style it’s pretty clear you’ve posted multiple times- and if I had to guess, are probably the one who also vandalized the board or knows who did.

They have security cameras and likely have a good idea of who did it.

I have no love lost for Maret, but the vandals and the neighbors are on the losing side of this. The shame is on them, not Maret.

No idea. But when your argument is “vandalism is Maret’s fault because other schools haven’t been vandalized” you’ve lost the plot.

Perhaps the anc rep could provide a few leads to an investigator since he most likely has first-hand knowledge of the owner(s)/operators of @TheLoraxDC.

Agree. But I am not that PP. Just pointing out there will be plenty of opportunity to condemn the vandal(s) once they are identified. But if you have no idea (!), then blaming the neighbors is premature.

Judging by your writing style you seem to be an entitled maret parent that doesn’t really care what the community thinks about a project in a residential area.
