This. I'm a teacher who is a Democrat and who also wants immigration reform. Why? Because I see how much of our resources are devoted to the ELL kids for very little return. A vast majority of their parents do not care about how their kids are doing in school. The parents don't speak English or care to learn, despite our school having a free EL program for parents.

The parents never come for open house or conferences. They rarely return phone calls or emails. School is seen as convenient and free babysitting for them, IMO.

Same here. Seems like it's an unpopular opinion for a teacher to state this in DCUM, but it is the case and not the exception.

Perhaps you are not a very good teacher then. Our Latino parents come to conferences and care very much about their kids' progress. Have you bothered to learn any Spanish? Any Urdu? Any Polish? Ukrainian? Any other language? Most educated people DO speak more than one language and this would help you build relationships with the families in your school as well as just meet basic expectations around being culturally intelligent.

Our families attend our ESL for adults classes. Maybe your families sense your disdain and stay away. Maybe your classroom management needs to improve. I see this periodically. There's no shame in it, we all have things to work on.
I don't know many people who think school is free babysitting, either. And our students who speak other languages mostly outperform our white kids by the time they are in high school. So maybe your schools aren't so great because of the staff. Just saying.

Different poster- also a teacher. My school is very international, but I agree with the previous teachers. Are there some parents who absolutely care and put the effort in, absolutely. But there are a ton, that shrug their shoulders or avoid calls when their kid is in trouble. We actually had parents say not to call if their kid is in trouble. There are a ton of parents who schedule a conference and then don’t show up. Now, are they working multiple jobs? Yes. Do they have multiple kids? Yes. Is this only hispanic families? No. But as a parent, your job is to make sure your kid goes to school and grows as an individual. It is a problem when we have kids who are ESL from K-6 and while they can speak fluently but struggle in school. We know in upper ES who is likely to drop out. They just did a report on this and the highest drop out groups were hispanic and ESL students.

Personally, I am against mass deportations. But illegal immigration is a problem for the schools.

Maybe private school enrollment will drop.
Let's face it, a lot of families just don't want their kids to be in underperforming schools without a whole lot of social capital.
I say this as a BTDT product of the public school system.

Fairfax may be a sanctuary jurisdiction but there is nothing they can do to stop students from being deported.

Again, most of the school-aged kids are either US citizens or hold asylum visas. Moreover, being a sanctuary city means that Fairfax won't use municipal/county resources to aid and abet ICE in rounding up law-abiding residents. So either ICE has to get big enough to take care of this themselves, or they can do what they are supposed to be doing and focus on criminals.

If they are here without permission they are by definition not law abiding. Everyone here without permission is eligible for deportation. That's what people voted for two weeks ago without any doubt. Fairfax county can't do anything to stop someone from being deported.

DP
I agree with you. As another poster said though, they can’t stop deportation but it doesn’t mean that Fairfax County has to use its resources to assist.

Fairfax county is so close to the nations capital that it is required to report status and it's not a far distance for ice to come get the criminals

Right. ICE. Not a county resource.

No one has said the county would use resources. But they also can't stop it from happening. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I don’t think anyone on here has said the county would try to stop it from happening, just reiterating that they probably won’t assist.

Page 8, post 10:18 asks what impact would Fairfax County being a sanctuary City have on deportation.

Right, but what in that question suggests that the county will resist? There is a post at 11:29 that reads, "Moreover, being a sanctuary city means that Fairfax won't use municipal/county resources to aid and abet ICE in rounding up law-abiding residents". So while the county might not resist, it might also not assist and it shouldn't be expected to.

The fact that it is a sanctuary jurisdiction and has actively resisted helping to keep murder suspects, child rapists and other violent offenders off the streets. They are intentionally obstructing keeping even criminals off the streets.

Ironically while reading old articles about sanctuary cities, I saw that that the new czar once said something to the effect of if sanctuary cities let immigration pick people up at the jails, they just get that one person. If the sanctuary cities release them then immigration has to go out and pick them up at their house, job, in the community and now not only the original person just released from jail is getting deported but everyone else here illegally that they find while searching that person's home and job that they never knew about is getting deported too.

Do you have examples showing this?
Serious question. Not arguing.

Yup and the majority of their kids are respectful and want to learn unlike a lot of the entitled rich kids who whine and complain about everything. Their entitled parents who run to the principal any time a teacher tells their child no or that their behavior is inappropriate because you know they are "involved" in the PTA

Huh? What are you drinking on about? The reason this happens is because the schools are over run by esol undocumented that the school doesn't focus on the standard middle of the road kids. The fact that undocumented don't contribute to the community by PTA volunteering is also a tell tale sign.

In my experience, PTA is a very white American concept, but immigrant families contribute to the school and to the kids in other ways. This goes for high-income immigrants from Asian countries as much as it does for undocumented immigrants from Latin America. There's more than one way to contribute, but sitting in a room once a month following Robert's Rules of Order is a distinctly white American one.

Sorry, I'm actually a Hispanic female. Your response is so typical of a limousine liberal. LOL.

Right down to the “our Latino families” and “our parents” as if they belong to the poster 🙄

I believe that you are an out-of-touch white liberal by your use of the word Latino, don't be stupid; report and deportation are coming soon and will clean up the areas. If you want to experience lawlessness, move to another country and enroll your kids there.

I think it's great that churches and other community groups offer ESL classes for adults (who may be the parents of ESOL kids in schools), but you've got to be crazy to tell a FCPS teacher that he/she needs to learn Spanish, Urdu, or whatever to "build relationships" with the parents of students who may or may not be legally here. They have plenty to you, and it would be nice if it was mainly the education of our kids. Our school has hired a parent liaison for this purpose, yet another resource that is devoted to working with the non-English speaking adult parents. No wonder Fairfax County is constantly raising taxes to provide all these services.

1000% the teacher who claims a “good teacher” would learn Spanish or Urdu or any other home languages their students could possibly speak is full of shit and I say that as a teacher in a very diverse school- my students don’t have one language they all speak at home. There are MANY. The time it would take to do that is so absurd and even IF one had the time to do it, there is no way that time couldn’t be better spent investing in robust classroom instruction and supports for the students. Not learning 33 phrases of about 20 different languages so you can have basic conversations on the phone that a translator with Language Line will handle.

Obama counted turn arounds at the border as deportations.

This is not true, when looking at just interior removals, that is those living in the US and not apprehended at the border Obama deported far more than trump ever did. The highest year he deported 250K.

I think Trump will deport the criminals who are here illegally but that will be it. Our economy would suffer big time without immigrants to do the jobs Americans won’t touch.

If they return to the same place, doesn't it make it easier to find them and deport them again?

How do they even find them in the first place? They live under the table.

Workplace raids, often. In the coming administration, Project 2025 has laid out a plan to rescind any prohibitions on raiding "sensitive areas" so we could see raids at hospitals, churches, schools, etc.

Government sanctioned terrorism on our own land.

They probably mean by running Science Olympiad and sending their own kids to private tutoring.

The PTA at our school has been largely run by Asian parents for years, though, despite PP's attempt to suggest PTAs are the educational equivalent of a hotdish.

I'm the PP and I do mean running the Science Fair but I also mean cooking for international night, volunteering to coach the running club, organizing an adult-supervised after school pick-up soccer match every day to keep kids busy until parents get off work, showing up to clean up the school grounds and plant flowers in the spring, and lots of other ad hoc items that are not "listening to a budget update and principal's announcements" once a month.
