This is very true. It's also true that the surrounding neighborhood is a LOT more white these days, those families have opted into the DCPS elementaries, and the interest in Banneker from that group is enormous. They see the Banneker kids walking around the neighborhood and at Seaton (where they go to fulfill their community service hours) and there is a huge amount of interest in the school. So we'll see what happens over the years. I don't know what the ideal non-Black percentage is so that it can still be a place a Black excellence.

Why is it that black people just can’t have something nice without others trying to intrude? They tried to disrespect Howard University by treating it as a dog park and now they’re trying to take Banneker High School. The black students at Banneker are doing fine and don’t need to be saved from those with a “colonizer mindset”. It doesn’t cost anything to just leave these students and their families alone. They don’t need affluent others on the PTO trying to change the culture of the school. LEAVE THEM ALONE.

The question was asked as to why white families don't go to Banneker in higher numbers if they are looking for a strong high school and the answer is SPECIFICALLY because people understand the school has developed as a place where the city's strongest black students can go and feel welcome and challenged and celebrated and white families do NOT want to intrude on that

But there is also a separate conversation about why white families won't stay in DCPS through high school and if one of the better high schools in the city is off limits to white applicants well -- that's one of the reasons why

You can't have it both ways -- get mad at white families for opting out of DCPS but also get mad at them for opting in and "taking" spots away from black students

The PPs earlier in the thread who were saying there is no viable option for white families except to just take what they are given and shut up were right to a degree -- there are people in this city who want to exercise reparations on white kids as though putting white kids in DCPS in their place will somehow fix centuries of oppression (nevermind that some of those kids aren't even white -- that gets ignored)

troll

Anytime anyone says anything supporting black people, it’s always considered a troll to some of this board. I’m just speaking the truth from a perspective of a black person living in DC since I was born in the 1990s. Has it ever occurred that high achieving black families want to send their black children to a predominately black school with other high achieving black children?

So your pro-segregation?

And you think it's ok for high-achieving black families to horde resources?

If you are not a troll, you might as well be.

There wasn’t anything mentioned about being pro-segregation. High achieving black children function better in environments with others who look like them. This eliminates any risk of racial bias from those who are intent on questioning the intelligence of black children and therefore creating a hostile and unwelcoming environment.

It’s only a problem when black families do it huh? Where’s your disdain for the affluent white families in Ward 3 who continue to hoard resources at schools like Janney, Key, Lafayette, Deal, Mann etc? I get the feeling that you think anytime the playing field is being leveled it’s unfair to white people. You somehow believe that black children excelling in a nurturing environment like Banneker is a threat to white children. Why is that? I would truly like to know.

white person here. no, it doesn’t seem weird at all to me. most white Americans have very little esposure to black MC/UMC culture, and it was something I was glad to learn about from living in DC and working at DC jobs with a lot of black coworkers & management. my kid is likely not Banneker material but I’d have absolutely zero reservations about sending him there.

tell it to DCPS and the mayor and the NYTimes, which all view racial balance as essential to “equity.”

I suggest ignoring all the exaggerated internet grievances on both sides and just … checking out the school, talking to parents & kids, and making up your own mind.

Just because you’re uncomfortable with discussing a very real issue doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t be allowed to voice their opinions on the matter. Folks like you like to sweep racial issues under the rug which further contributes to the societal divide between blacks and whites.

What resources are white families hoarding at these schools?

Tons of money. It’s shameful that a school can fundraise $500,000 but then turn around and get upset about their school budget.
